I got this same message yesterday on my new Iphone 4 as well. I immediately called the Apple store to set up an appointment. They ran a diagnostic on it and the test said that the temperature got up to over 300 Degrees Fahreinheit. They did replace my unit. I suggest if you have this issue go to the Apple store and have them run a test as well.

Just back from our swimming pool on a 95 degree day. New IPhone 4 shut down due to temperature warnings when I had in directly in the sun for 5 minutes. I let it cool down and wrapped it in my shirt where it lasted about 30 more minutes before shutting down again. I had never had a issue with my 3G in the past. Add this to the signal issue when holding the phone and I hope I have not purchased 2 years of headaches. I do love the new features of the phone though.

It varies on it's cause to show the "Temperature" warning. I've come across it on 3GS and supposedly will on i4 during the Summer times when they eventually release an i4 car dock.

If you are using it in the car as navigation mode, I recommend using the Air Conditioner on defrost mode when it's on a car dock. The cold air blowing up into the window will keep the i4 and it's previous models cool on the back end for a while.

Just not too cold. The window starts to turn icy.

This Temperature warning is why my iPhone 4 now has a shattered back panel.

It was sitting on my cool glass front room table not doing anything for 70 minutes (I know this as I'd been watching England Vs Germany) when Germany hit their 4th goal. I picked up the phone and went outside for a smoke. Noticed that when I tried to unlock the phone it had the Temperature error so I took a screen grab, found a shady spot next to me and popped it down to cool off on a cool bit of concrete ledge I was sat on.

about a minute or so later, without me touching the phone it slid off the ledge falling about 2.5 feet onto the concrete floor, resulting in the back glass shattering.

What I don't get is why it had overheated? I make sure I go into my multitasking option and remove anything running every couple of hours. I know nothing was running at the time and I know that if this 'overheating' issue had not have occurred I would not have popped the phone on the side and it would not have made it's merry way from the centre of the ledge it was comfortably (and safely) say on, to being layed on the floor, shattered.

Well, the issue took my mind off the crushing England destruction, but now I am awaiting Apple's reply about a repair, failing that, my banks 'Purchase Protection'.

Temperature rubbish. What a joke.

When it was on the table was the sun beating down on it? Because if thats so then that is why. This device soaks up the sun like no ones business. It can be cool inside or you can be not doing anything but if it is soaking in the sun it will do that. - coming from personal experience. Part of the reason I want the white one this time. Plus the phone isn't supposed to opperate above 115 so if it was really hot outside could be another reason.

Sorry about your phone, best of luck with it. Only thing I can tell ya is to always have a case, as this is what I have learned with the phones. If you don't like the bulkiness of cases maybe but an invishield on the back of it.

I can confirm that in the sun, this thing gets HOT.

I left it on the field laying in the sunshine for ten minutes, and when I came back.. wow! I thought the thing was going to set my hand alight! I was a little concerned that it would never recover, but five minutes later it had cooled down enough to be useable again.

I guess from now on I'm keeping this baby in the shade!

got this phone on launch day - first few days were fine. i haven't been too concerned about the reception issues that have been well-documented everywhere. However, I am concerned about what has been occurring over the past two days. Yesterday - i started receiving random 'no sim card' error messages. And today receiving this temperature warning message. The phone was sitting idle for a half hour or so in a cool, air conditioned room. No way that temperature should have tripped this warning message. I may switch back to the old 3g.

Remember two things. This phone has metal bands on the side, and has glass on the front and back. The metal bands will absorb heat rapidly, and did you know that glass absorbs heat amazingly well also?

If you take a cigarette paper (very flammable) and put it flat and flush against a glass (made of glass, not a plastic glass), then use a normal lighter (not a torch/crack lighter) and put the flame up to the paper, under normal circumstances, the paper won't catch fire.

And you guys wonder why your iP4 is getting that, but not the 3GS. Funny people.
