PLEASE HELP! Can't get USB mixer board to input, distortion in monitor

Somebody's got to know the answer to this, I've been working in it for weeks with no resolve.

I'm using my new iMac 27" with dual quad Intel i5's to run streaming video to Ustream for a video program. I'm using Wirecast production software. Previously I had an Alesis USB audio mixer, which worked fine until the mixer itself developed a problem. I replaced it with a similar Behringer USB mixer, and these problems developed. I borrowed a Mackie USB mixer board, still the same problems. I got a Blue Snowball USB mic, same problems.

When I open the Wirecast video production program, it tells me that it does not recognize the USB video codec. I've posted this problem on the Wirecast forum, but all they can advise me is that there may be some other software that is grabbing hold of the USB video codec before I open Wirecast, and only one piece of software can use the USB video codec at a time. The Wirecast support people can't figure it out either, and say it must be a problem with the computer. I've gone through all the proper settings for the computer and the software, and I'm fairly competent and relatively sure I've done it all correctly-- dozens of times over.

I know that the signal is getting to the computer via the USB input, as I can hear my microphone tests with headphones plugged into the computer via Garage Band. However, the sound is distorted, a little high and tinny and perhaps doubled. When I record with the Snowball, the sound in the monitors is weird, but the recorded sound is OK.

I also have Ableton Light loaded onto the machine, though of course I do not have it active when I'm running Wirecast (I also do not have Garage Band active when running Wirecast). Also of note-- I got a new Axiom 25 midi keyboard at the same time I got the Behringer mixer, could that have fouled up the USB sound input when I plugged it in? I have it disconnected now.

How can I make sure that nothing else is trying to use the USB audio codec before I open up Wirecast? Is there anything else that might be causing the problem?

Also, why can't I seem to get a pure live monitor sound on the headphones when testing with Garage Band? It didn't do this before, the sound was always pure when being monitored during recording. Now it sounds distorted, as described above. Again, when I play back the recorded sound, it is OK, but during recording it is distorted.

Many thanks for all help. J.Beau
