Adding a case does reduce the problem and is necessary with this phone anyway!

Actually, it isn't necessary. I don't have one and have had no problems. I have one that clips on my belt for when I'm transporting it but it comes out for use.

If you have a problem take it to the store and complain. If it's defective I would imagine they'll replace it. There's always going to be a few bad ones that get through.

I have no idea what clamshell thing you're talking about. If it looked like a clamshell Why did you buy it?

No matter how expensive a device is, if it has moving parts, you are bound to have rattles. The iPhone has moving parts. I can't believe it is that bad as to make such a big deal about. If it is, take it back and see what they say.

Like I said before, DON'T shake or tap on your iPhone.

my iphone rattles when i set it down and when i shake it. I think its the auto focus tho, not really sure. If i tap around the camera area, it rattles. I think all iphone 4's should be doing this. When i shake my iphone, it sounds like something is loose. I DONT think iphone 4's should be doing this. Im going to see what the people at the genius bar will say tomorrow evening when i see them.

Nice one - that's my problem exactly. Definitely seems like a fault.

Yes, mine rattles too, when I put it down on a hard surface, and also when I tap near the camera. The consensus seems to be that it's the auto focus mechanism and that it's mostly normal. Still annoying, but I can live with it as long as nothing's wrong.

I have the slight rattle too, BUT if your phone works fine then i don't see the problem? if the phone isn't functioning properly then there a problem

There's an app for that! Actually, for more instruments than merely a rattle...

Mine does this too. I agree that it's undesirable but it appears perfectly normal for an iPhone 4 to do this.

Got my iPhone 4, 4 days ago and noticed a tiny rattle when i shook the phone near my ear. Didn't bother me until i tapped my phone on my hand for whatever reason and it made a pretty loud rattle, almost like a marble kind of noise.

Anyway, i've been on the phone to Apple and they pretty much guaranteed that if I went to them with the problem they would give me a refurbishment as a replacement (which i'm not doing).

I have also been on the phone to my network provider (o2 in the UK), they have said they would have a look at it, but it could take 28 days for the phone to be sent off and a replacement/repair to be sent back!

I am still within my contract cancellation period, i will probably end up canceling the contract and buying it again.

Those who are saying it is normal are wrong. if it only happens in 50% of phones then 50% of them phones have a fault. it's not consistent therefore it wasn't an intentional feature.

I have this rattle on my iphone 416gb, I have isolated it to the sleep/wake button, if I hold it down while shaking the phone the noise doesn't happen.

Am I going to complain and ask for a replacement? hello no, this is not a design flaw and is something that is such a small deal that it's not worth my gas and time driving down to the apple store, to be honest life around me is usually to loud to hear the rattle, so no biggie.

YES..for my case it is Sleep/Power button sound.. When i follow your suggestion to shake while HOLD down the Sleep/Power button. no more rattling sound, when i release it and shake the rattling sound is there

I got mt i4 a few months ago and it never rattled. not sure when it started, but i set it or tapped the back, and noticed a hollow sound. when i checked again, I noticed the irattle. It happens when I tap the back right on the apple or higher near the camera.

I went to "The Store," and talked to one of the geniuses. He must have thought i was an idiot or something. he kept saying its normal. I asked him to look inside, since he couldn't hear anything, what with the 100 ppl in the store. So, he took it in the back, came out 5-10 mins later, saying there's nothing loose or wrong.

My question is why did the phone not make a sound before, but now it does? I've heard about the proximity and shutter blah, blah... But if it's normal, why don't other makers' smartphones have the same issues?
