What is AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8C)

Sorry but I really don't understand it. On my iMac it's turned off (I have a Linksys wireless router setup), yet on my macbook, it's turned on(?)
Can someone please explain to me in layman terms?
Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

The AirPort Extreme that you are referring to is the built-in wireless adapter in each of your Macs. Basically, in order to use a wireless network, you need at least two components: 1) A wireless router or access point, and 2) A wireless adapter.

The bottom line? If either of your Macs needs to access a wireless network, their AirPort Extreme feature must be enabled to do so.
