Muffeled audio using Bluetooth headset

On my iPhone 4 everyone is complaining that they can barely hear me when I'm using my Bluetooth headset. I have a few headsets that I have tried, which never had any complaints in the past with my previous iPhone, but are all having this problem with the iPhone 4. Even using the Apple earphones I get complaints. Anyone else have this problem? No problems with iOS 4 on 3G or 3GS, only iPhone 4.

I'm having this same problem. Several people have told me that I sound muffeled. When I disconnect my headset and talk to them on the phone they can hear me perfectly. I also have problems with only being able to get about 15ft. away from the phone while using it without it cutting out. I never had this problem with my 3G & same headset. I wish I knew what could be done about it other than just not using my bluetooth. I have to use it because I only get signal on top of my kitchen table.

I've been having the same problem. I have used a Motorola H375 for quite a while now with the iPhone 3G and 3GS and never had a single problem. The day I got the iPhone 4, I made a phone call with this headset and it started out fine, but after about 5 minutes, the friend I was talking to said he started to hear electronic-sounding noises as I spoke. We realized that this happened if I got more than about 10ish feet away from the phone. Then, 5-10 minutes later, no matter how close to the phone I was, my friend said I sounded pretty muffled and that it was harder to understand me. NOW if I try to use that headset, when I speak it just gives off a completely incomprehensible sound for the other person. I bought a Jawbone Icon the other day thinking that perhaps the Motorola had just gone bad, and so far, it turns out that the Jawbone Icon works fine as long as it's already paired to the phone before I make or receive a call, but if I, for example, answer a phone call using the phone itself, and try to turn the Jawbone Icon on and throw it on my ear in the middle of the conversation, they say I'm muffled and can't hear me. Given that my Motorola H375 isn't working with it, I have doubts that it's an issue of older vs newer headsets, but I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. It seems that a lot of other people are having problems pairing the headset... I have no problems pairing it, but I have major problems with the audio quality that comes out on the other end apparently. Hopefully others will post regarding their experiences or thoughts on the problem and hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

I had this as well with a Sony stereo headset, but I was able to repair it by setting the volume slider on the iPhone 4 to maximum (when audio is going out to bluetooth) and then adjusting volume to suit on the headset.

They added a feature in iOS 4 that presented on my 3GS as jointly-controllable volume, you could either use the on-screen volume slider or the headset volume control, both would move the slider & volume up or down, cool. This seems to have been messed up on the iPhone 4, with the volume slider & headset volume *in series*, the volume slider setting the 'line level' out to the headset. Hope they fix this, it's a stupid mistake, set volume slider to max meanwhile.

No, John, the problem happens to be the listener cannot hear me because my voice is distorted and muffled. I'm forced to use the speaker phone or holding the phone using the "wrong way"

The iPhone 4 has major reception issues. I'm very disappointed. It's like having a new born baby with many fatal illness waiting it to be hospitalized! It's also allergic to human skin contact where we have to use rubber gloves to touch it!

I really regret getting the iPhone 4 and I need to roll back to my iPhone 3GS because it's so far has better reception and no problem with Bluetooth headsets.

Apple fix my child ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!

I now tried using the wired headphones that come with the iPhone and people are telling me they can barely hear me. I turned the volume up with no change. I also noticed the sound quality is different and volume weaker when listening to music or calls through the wired headphones. I am very happy with the phone and was getting my wife her first iPhone when the white one comes out. This is not helping convince the wife she should get one. All I hear is "All that money for that phone and it sounds worse then your 3G". (I am not going back to a 3G and after seeing the retina display I will not get a 3GS either) Please fix soon Apple.

I have had similar issues, but mine started with the 3g and continued with the 3gs. I still have the same problems with the iphone 4, but the problems actually seem less frequent with the new phone. With the original iphone, I never had an issue with my bt headsets. When I upgraded to the 3g and later to the 3gs, I began to have the issues of my voice being muffled or distorted. What I have found is that if the issue occurs during a call, if I switch the source from the headset to the handset and then back to the headset it solves the issue. I have also found the issue to occur more often at home or my office, which each have a wifi network. While I have been told that this should not be an issue, it is odd that I consistently have the problem in those two areas. That said, the first few calls I have made with the iphone 4 sounded great and I thought the issue had been resolved. Unfortunately, it has reoccurred several times with my Jawbone icon. Again, I have found switching the source to the handset and then back to the headset solves the problem more often than not (even though there should not be an issue to begin with). Also, I have found that I almost always have the issue if I fail to initiate the call connected to the headset. If I switch the call to the headset in the middle of the conversation or answer a call by turning the headset on while the phone is ringing (as opposed to having a connection prior to the call coming in), then the problem is pronounced.

I am having similar issues. IP4, connected to a 2009 Toyota Bluetooth system. Worked flawlessly with my 3G.

I have erased all settings, rebooted phone, tried every way of pairing. Phone is always in a plastic holder 3 inches from stero or in cup holder. Result, static for the other end. No one can hear me and my calls get s garbeled and fade in and out. I hear just fine.

My 1G and 3G all work great, but not the iPhone 4.

I have not yet contacted Apple. I keep hoping I will find a solution on these boards.
