Finder info displays incorrect filesize - can someone explain this?

hi, i am trying to free up space on my startup drive and while doing so discovered that my "Movies" directory, though now empty, shows a file size of 10.23GB!

i've copied the folder contents to another drive and the result is that the same. in essence when i copy the movie files one at a time it amounts to a little over 1GB. but when i copy the whole folder i get 11.64GB which seems to mean that "somewhere" a ghost 10+GB space is hidden.

can someone help me figure out why and - most importantly - help me recover this ghost space?

thx in advance
