No SIM message on iPhone 4

So I got my phone Friday, everything seemed great at first. However, Saturday evening I started getting "No SIM" errors. Restarting the phone usually fixes it, but it is quite frustrating. Anyone else seeing this issue?

More detail:

First error was seen around 5:30PM (EST) yesterday and restarting once fixed it. Second time was around 9pm, that time I had to restart three times to get signal back. This morning it happened again around 10am. It is nearly noon now, haven't seen it again so far but I am sure it will happen again... paranoid about missing calls now!

Apple is replacing my iPhone because of this error message. I got the SIM eplaced, etc. Just be careful if you get it replaced. Apple failed to tell me that on top of the $29 dollar replacement/repair charge, they also place a $599 hold on your account. This caused me to have an overdraft charge and rendered my checking account unusable until my next paycheck or the hold is released. (I was only overdrawn by $10 GRRR!) Apple did contact the bank with me and got the overdraft charge dropped, but the hold still applies.

Yeah, I am afraid it is a device issue. The tape thing failed, so I just called AT&T to find out where to get a new SIM. I will try the SIM, then when that fails I will see about getting the phone replaced. I figure if I go to Apple with this issue they will just tell me to try a new SIM anyway, so I might as well go ahead and get that step out of the way.

Did you buy from Apple or AT&T? I purchased from AT&T; I am not sure if AT&T will replace it... I assume it will be a warranty issue with Apple. That is ridiculous that they place $599 hold though!! Thanks for the warning, I would not have expected that at all. I know on the usual replacements from Apple they always say they will charge your credit card if you don't return the damaged product, but I did not realize they would place a hold on the card. I will definitely use a credit card rather than my bank card if it comes to that. Which it probably will.

Went to AT&T and had them replace the micro SIM at Apple's request. I didn't expect it to fix the "No SIM" problem, but it did-- at least for now.

He did have to go through an entire package of micro SIM's before he got one that would work. Oddly the same thing happened on my wife's phone. Maybe the SIM's just have a high defect rate.

Yesterday I went to AT&T for a new SIM. They told me it was probably the phone... I agreed, but knew Apple would probably just tell me to get a new SIM so I wanted to get that troubleshooting step out of the way. As I was leaving the AT&T store I got the "No SIM" error again. I immediately made an appointment at the Apple store (there's an app for that!) for later that night. While at the Apple store, the tech said he had seen it a few times already. Long story short, I have a new iPhone now and haven't seen the problem yet.

Thanks everyone!

This is a very frustrating issue.
I started getting the error message last Friday (after getting my phone Thursday). Turning the airplane mode off/on never resolved the error. It has gotten to where restarting the phone sometimes doesn't resolve the error. I went to the AT&T store where I got the phone Sunday and they replaced the SIM card. Apple told me yesterday to restore the phone, which I did last night. No luck. I talked to them again today and my next step is getting a replacement phone. (I'm not close to an Apple store so my main option is mail my phone in and they'll then mail me a replacement. It could take 7-10 days. I can't be without a phone that long. Luckily, I'm going to be in a city next week with an Apple store so I'll go in there and get a new one. I just hope the temporary fix keeps working between now and then or I'm in trouble.)

For those still dealing with this issue... don't waste the time on power cycles. Keep a paperclip or sim removal tool in your pocket. Just pop the SIM out and slide it back in. That should temporarily fix it. But yes, this is a very frustrating problem. Hopefully you all can get to an Apple store that has a replacement in stock for you!!
