iPhone 3GS - Keep iOS4 or go back to iOS3?

I've had iOS4 for just over a week and I'm seriously considering going back to 3.x. Lovely as the interface is, it just doesn't offer any real benefits and has a couple of serious flaws (for me anyway) as follows:

1/ No Double Tap for phone

Covered in other threads, but the phone takes twice as long to use - up to 4 taps to get to the favourites depending on where you are. That's like the Blackberry I already don't like!

What I don't get is the -point- of the 'tray' that the double tap now slides up - mine now has 9 pages of apps that makes it quicker just to select the app from the main screen again rather than go hunting through every app I've used recently. This seems to be those that are multi-tasking and those that aren't. If I could control what apps appeared there (so exclude pointless ones like the address book, weather, messages that take up space) then possibly useful.

Am I supposed to manage the apps myself now? Quitting those I don't want? Now I've got a Nokia!

2/ SLOWWWWWW!

iOS4 has made a huge difference to the responsiveness of the iPhone - now actions are jerky, some games play badly (Angry Birds), the whole interface (though nice) doesn't respond as well as it used to.

What do I get that I like? The new email client is much better for handling multiple accounts like I have. Err, that's it. I already managed without multi-tasking (nice to have but not essential) and folders the same.

So, I'm investigating how to go back to iOS3..

I suspect that multitasking might be useful once apps are release to use it. However, I don't use the multitasking function, I just use the app icon again.

Folders is easier for me personally. I had six pages before, not I have just one and can open any app in two touches.

As for the slowness.. have you done a hard rest? (hold home and on/off button until apple logo appears) This cured slowness on both a 3G and 3Gs model for us at home, and most I've heard that have had the problem.

I'll try the reset, thanks.

It's not multi-tasking that is the issue, but the tray that seems to get loaded with every app I've used, thus reducing it's usefulness.

Personally I find that finding apps in folders takes just as long as finding apps in pages - mostly because you have to remember what folder you put them in! (a real challenge for the kids).

On my iPod 3G I've left folders off and it seems easier to use. No phone here so no double tap issue, but with only 3 pages it's much faster to find an app on the pages than on the tray.

You don't need to use the tray. It's useful to get to a recent app that woul otherwise require going to another screen an into a folder. Otherwise, just ignore it.

No, just ignore them. They shouldn't be using any power.

Not easy.

And so the Tray becomes useless and I wish to have my double-tap for phone back!
Perhaps with enough shouting there will be an option in the next update to iOS4.

Surely I'm not the only one who sees the Tray as less than useful when it fills up with apps? Even a limit would be better - say the last 8 apps, or just those with active threads..

More options please!

With the purchase of Palm my wife can get me a Pre for free.. Don't want to go there, but could be interesting to try!
