SquirrelMail driving me nuts!

Just moved to Tiger Server. (Was long time WebStar user) Continuing to use Eudora Mail Server until I can get Tiger mail functioning, but at this point, I'm like a deer... or, should I say, squirrel... in the headlights. Can anyone point me in a direction off this insane highway??? Trying to access http://mydomain.com/webmail - yields:

I did a standard Tiger Server install. I shouldn't need to download any additional plug-ins, right?

It seems I did not have Webmail enabled for that site. Duh! Now, I'm presented with the *WebMail for Mac OS X Server* login page (which I was not getting before).

However, it insists that my login is incorrect. I've double-checked the username and password.

Could this be a local VS network account problem? The whole Open Directory thing has me a bit confused. Whenever I go to the Workgroup Manager to work with my user list, I get:

*YOU ARE WORKING IN A DIRECTORY NODE THAT IS NOT VISIBLE TO THE NETWORK.

Accounts created in the local directory node will be restricted to this server. To create network accounts, click OK then use the popup menu below the toolbar to go to a network-visible directory node.*

Toolbar says:

*Authenticated as "admin" to local directory: /Netinfo/DefaultLocalNode*

Choices from popup menu are:

Local (which is checked)
Other...
Search Path
/BSD/local

What am I missing?

Hi,

Firstly, as far as squirrelmail goes - please make sure you go to workgroup manager, and have IMAP mail enabled for the user in question. Squirrelmail will only work with IMAP (or POP AND IMAP) accounts... perhaps this is the source of your problem? i.e. If mail is not enabled, or POP Only mail is enabled, then Squirrelmail will NOT work.. .the user NEEDS an imap account. Suggest you give your users both POP and IMAP accounts in workgroup manager... save.. and then reboot to make sure changes take effect.

Secondly, you will probably (soon) need to set up an LDAP Open Directory Master, and an Admin master account.... this is pretty complicated, but is well covered in O'Reilly's Mac OS X Panther Server administration book (Chapter 6). This will allow you to use workgroup manager from outside your network (of course you will need to make sure necessary ports are open.. ) - and will get rid of the irritating msg you are getting.

It is not difficult to do, but then I don't quite understand the intricacies either - so suggest you take a look at the same at your bookstore.. and of course hopefully someone here with a higher paygrade might be kind enough to give you more info.

Although the O'Reily book is now somewhat outdated in some respects with the advent of Tiger server, I still found many good answers in this book (And of course the Tiger version is to be published shortly...)

Hope this helps...
p.s. YES - I wasted a lot of time trying to get up to speed as well... we Mac users are spoiled.. and even though starting OS X Tiger server is pretty simple by standard Unix/Linux standards... by Mac ease of use standards it is one pretty darn steep learning curve.
p.p.s. STRONGLY recommend that you backup first before making any major changes or software upgrades... always best. Carbon Copy Cloner works very well for me.
