X11 backquote <`> key hangs all X applications

I recently started using my macbook at work to access X11 based design tools. I open terminal and SSH -X into our server. All applications work fine except the <`> key hangs any X application that is running. All I have to do to recreate the problem is launch an Xterm window and hit the <`> key and X11 is hung. Notice I do not have to hit command-` just the <`> key. I have tried enabling and disabling the options in preferences regarding input. Nothing seems to work. Has anyone else seen this and if so, how do you get around it.

Thanks, I reposted this question in the forum you suggested. I wish the command you tried worked for me. as soon as I hit the <`> key Xterm freezes. I can no longer type anything in the Xterm window. I can still click X11 menu options but the application is locked. I even tried starting a new Xterm process. The window appears but the input is locked. I can't type anything.

I experienced a similar problem and figured I'd post it here for posterity.

My X11 hung when I pressed Command-` (e.g. to try to switch to the next open X11 window).

To troubleshoot, I started two xterms and ran "date" in a 1 sec loop in one of them. After Command-` the date kept running. This said to me that X11 didn't crash, just the input. I started xev and on Command-` got a FocusOut event, mode NotifyWhileGrabbed, which may mean that Command-` was causing some kind of "server grab". Using the X11 app menu to select the xev window and then close it restored input to my xterm, perhaps by removing the "grab"(???) from the now-closed xev window.

In any case, for me the fix was to open X11 preferences -> Input and select "Enable key equivalents under X11".
