Best folding bluetooth keyboard?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a folding bluetooth keyboard? I realize that apple's keyboard is by far the nicest, but it's just a tad too long to fit comfortably in my purse, and I'd like to have something compact for travel.

A search for "folding AND keyboard" with search function on the right would have revealed two previous threads on this subject. The search function can be very useful, especial with the operators AND and OR.

I've read a whole bunch of threads too and had no real luck.

I hope this helps though.

Thanks! My problem is that I don't have anyplace to try any of them in person, so it would be nice if we could get some feedback from people who are actually using them.

The Matias and the Stowaway seem to be the most high profile, but I'd sure like to hear from someone using a folding keyboard on a regular basis. There's plenty of info on what pairs well and what has problems, but not much about the actual use experience--what the keys feel like, if all the keys work properly with the ipad, how it folds, if they break easily, and so on.

I bought a freedom pro keyboard for my iPad. I've had it for about six weeks now. The keyboard is compact (especially folded), rugged and pairs easily. The keys are smaller than on the Apple wireless keyboard. And it sits absolutely flat. So it is not as natural a typing motion as I am accustomed to. It has a lot of multifuction keys that I find superflous. My biggest problem with the keyboard however is the left right up and down keys are very close to the '?' and other keys in the lower right corner. It is very easy to hit one of them. The up and down keys are particularly treacherous because you end up overwriting lines above or below where you're typing.

While I am impressed with the keyboard overall, my typing speed drops significantly as a result of the above issues.

I'm impressed with the Matias on general principles, though I haven't seen one. I would easily forego the keypad to save on size and the fact that in general I don't use one. Bring out a Matias without it, and I'm in.

Yes, I will. I'm tending towards the Matias, I think. I'll let you know once I've had a chance to try it.

BTW, for those also interested in this, I noticed on the Happy Owl site (mentioned in another thread here) that they had a note to the effect that they'd be evaluating folding keyboards since their cases don't have enough room for the Apple keyboard, either. Might be worth checking back in a while to see what they come up with.

I just looked at the Matias keyboard. That's a full keyboard! Makes it so the keyboard isn't just limited to the iPad. It is compatible with the iPad. If you want to use is with the iphone you need iOS4. They have two nice looking stands that the iPad could rest on.

But...there is always a but... The Apple wireless keyboard is about the same size as the Matias folded, and thinner. The aluminum casing for the Apple keyboard might be more rugged that the Matias plastic construction. But then again the Matias is meant to be transported. The Apple keyboard is cheaper.

What about battery life!!! Gee... I would hate to see battery stock go up because I bought a wireless keyboard that sends me to potter fields.

Yeah, battery life is a consideration. It's true that it's almost as long as the apple keyboard, but that extra inch or so does make a difference (and the fact that there's no kind of bag or cover for the apple one). For me, the biggest drawback is that the Matias is so thick when it's folded. I hadn't noticed that number before.

Menotek Flexible Bluetooth Waterproof Mini Keyboard For Apple iPad 3G and Wifi models

I have been looking at these flexible keyboards for my use. I went into a store the other day and they had several of these hooked up to computers on the counter. I was shocked at how good they felt and how good the typing experience was on them. This may fit your needs. Sorry - don't know how to get a link in here, but I found this on Amazon. If you just search Flexible Bluetooth Keyboard on Amazon, it will bring up alot of these to look at.

I just received the Freedom i-Connex keyboard today - about 2 hours ago. It paired with my iPod Touch running iOS4, and it paired with my PC. I'm typing on it right now on the PC.

Folding keyboards are a challenge to design I'm sure. To make them compact yet close to 100% layout and still small isn't really possible. Something has to give. I think the Freedom i-Connex is a good compromise, with a few caveats.

- The QWERTY keys are actually 100% verified by comparing it with my full sized Microsoft keyboard.
- The keys in the center, where the fold is, are in the proper position but trimmed on the edge near the center. The B key is small enough that I've missed it a couple of times already.
- The space "bar" is split and end to end length of both space bar keys is not quite 2 1/2" I find the space bar layout easy to use in spite of this. I type space mostly with my right thumb.
- The number key row is small and the "1" key is third from the left so I have to look closely to use it. Not a big problem for me.
- The biggest problem is the right shift key, which has an uparrow rather than the word "shift," is too far to the right. The cursor up key is where the shift key should be. The right shift key is also small for a shift key, and smaller than the left shift key. This is a big issue but one I'll learn to live with as I generally like the keyboard. I have made quite a few errors because of the right shift key.
- The Del key incorrectly does the same action as the backspace key; both delete the character to the left of the insert point. This is only true on the iPod Touch, the Del key works properly here on the PC. I have sent the company an email asking about a fix for this.

As the iPod Touch is designed as a touch screen device there are quite a few things that must still depend on a finger on the screen and can not be accessed through the keyboard. Thus the keyboard is mostly useful for email, notes, and things like blogging or forum responses on the internet.

I've had another folding keyboard for my old Sony PDA for several years. That keyboard layout was a mess compared to this one.

Overall I'm pretty happy with this keyboard as a travel companion. We are going to Paris for two weeks soon and my intention is to take only the iPod Touch and this keyboard rather than a laptop,

The i-Connex will go into standby mode after 15 minutes of non use. To re-enable it turn it off and back on and it reconnects in a second. The keyboard will connect to the ipod automatically once paired the first time. I suspect the battery life will be very good but time will tell.

The little stand for the iPod is stored inside the keyboard in a slot which is pretty handy. The stand is functional yet the angle adjustment doesn't allow for much variation.

In spite of the shortcomings of folding keyboards and the few quirks of this one I do recommend it. I'm a touch typist and have been very frustrated with the virtual keyboard on the iPod Touch after 7 months of use. I'm so glad to finally have a Bluetooth physical keyboard.
