Top right corner near battery, telephone symbol over two rows of squares?

Can someone please tell me what this means? I can't find anything about it in the paperwork that came with my phone

This is tty turned on..in Settings,phone,tty. Turn off and it should go away

It's the symbol for TTY, an assistive device for the hard of hearing.

See page 17 of iPhone iOS4 User Guide

You can turn it off by going to Settings > Phone > TTY > OFF.

There's a list of status bar icons in the user manual on page 17: http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_iOS4_UserGuide.pdf

It says that one means you've set it up to work with TTY.
