iPhone 4 internal mic active during phone call with headphones

Is anyone else noticing that their iPhone's internal microphone is active when they have the Apple supplied headphones connected during a phone call? I don't believe that this was the case when I used the Apple headphones that came with my iPhone 3G.

I really really really don't want to restore as a new phone. It's not so much anything saved within the apps but its my collected SMS messages which I don't want to lose. (There's some good stuff in there I don't want to lose.) Is there any way to archive the SMS messages on my computer, because if so, I might give that a call just to try.

I archive ALL my texts.

PhoneView for Mac lets you save them in multiple formats, including XML (for web browsers) and PDF. These two formats I mention, when viewed, will make it look as if you were looking at the convo on your phone.

Tansee iPhone Transfer SMS for Windows will save in text format or XML (web browser) and when saved as XML, it will look as if you were looking at your phone's threading. I don't know if they've updated it though, they probably have. It's been a year since I used it.

Same thing for me; didn't notice the issue with the Apple headphones, but today my 2nd awesome pair of NuForce noise-cancelling headphones arrived (left 1st pair on a plane 😟 ) and walking down the street attempting to talk with a client, the traffic noise was so amplified they could barely understand me. And needless to say, I could barely understand them given the outside noise amplification. Thought it might be the headphones, but no--absolutely no problems with friend's 3G phone (and the same headphones worked fine w/ my old 2G phone). Restarting phone didn't help. Trying to plug in differently doesn't help (and if it did, wouldn't be an effective solution!) Guess I'll head to the Genius Bar for a new phone.

Having the same issue with both my iPhone 4 and my girlfriends iPhone 4. A friend of mine with an iPhone 4 reported it as well. I can hear myself and background noise in my apple headphones as soon as a phone connection is made, actually as soon as I hear the ringing tone. This problem doesn't happen while on FaceTime call or Skype call.

Could this be software-related? Are people not noticing this problem because they don't use their headphones? I find it strange out of millions iPhones sold that just a handful of persons would have this issue, and I would happen to have 3 defects out of 3 iPhone 4 around me...please apple support : bug fix or clear answer!

Nope, this happens during regular voice calls. The best way I have found to prove this issue is this:

Use a pair of sound isolating headphones (any decent pair will do), and make a call. Just hold the phone mic near your mouth to talk. You will hear your voice in the headset. This DOES NOT happen with the 3G or 3GS... which is really concerning to me. This can most likely be fixed with software, but as of yet i have not heard many people complaining, mostly since people are not using a decent headset to make calls (even with inline mics).

I tried it with sennheiser hd-25 (very isolated...) and shure mpa-3c mic adaptor and the problem is obvious. I guess you must be right that with non isolated headphones people don't really notice it. But I find it strange that with over 4 millions iphone 4 worldwide, this issue isn't addressed more than this. After all the primary function of this machine is to be a phone, and it should behave the same way it was with previous versions of the phone (i.e. iphone 3GS, 3G, 2G).
