Certain icon types will not show up in Mac OS. They appear as blank files.

Okay, so I've been using Mac OS for 2 weeks now. I haven't done anything besides changing some icons here and there, but no "hardcore" system tweaks involving editing text files etc.

If I download certain icons that should appear as an icon of some sort (how would I know? I've never been able to see them!) they show up as an white, empty, blank, 0 kb file that I can't use for anything.

Here's an example of such icon:
http://flarup.deviantart.com/art/Camera-Icon-70729129?q=1&qo=1

In the "MAC" folder I simply see an empty file and not an icon. However, .png, .icns, .ico etc all work just fine, but for some reason this empty file won't show up as an icon, like it's supposed.

Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's usually best to nothing until you learn an OS.

How are you downl;oading them. I just went to your example and dragged the flarup.png to my desktop (that's all you need to do to download). It shows the image on my file and is appended .png.

Try that and let us know what happens.

Do you mean the Macintosh HD folder?
You really shouldn't save to that folder. Save within your Documents folder. I make a folder called MyStuff w2ithin Documents to seperate my stuff from stuff Applications puts there. Then use all the sub folders I need.

I would also suggest you <a href="http://www.apple.com/support/mac101" </a>take a look at Mac 101 and Switch 101. There's a wealth of info there.

I think we're talking a bit past each other.

I've been using Windows for more than 10 years and I'm somewhat of a techie. Even though I switched to Mac OS I've adapted extremely quickly and I'm not afraid to test the possibilities of the OS. I haven't gotten as far as that in Mac OS, yet, so I can confidently say that I haven't touched any of the critical OS files.

Here's the same topic I made before I signed up here
http://macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16804548

Anyway... after I've downloaded the .zip package with the icon I navigate to /Users/Joh/Desktop/Camera Icon_byFlarup/Color Lens
and in here should be an icon, however I get something like this:
http://cl.ly/1WSA/content
don't mind the hidden files showing.

Noooo, you didn't insult me 🙂 I was just afraid we were getting off track. This is the internet, insults aren't worse than that anyway 😉

Here are the exact steps
1. Download the zip archive from http://flarup.deviantart.com/art/Camera-Icon-70729129?q=1&qo=1
2. Unzip and navigate to Camera Icon_ByFlarup/Color Lens/MAC/Camera Color Lens
3. The file "Camera Color Lens" is supposed to be an icon of some sort. It doesn't have a file extension like icns, png or whatever.
4. Does it show up as an icon to you? To me it shows up as a blank file, while other people, apparently, can view it as an icon.

Strange, I'll try a different unzipper. Just a moment...

Edit: oh my god, you're totally right. I was using Rucksack.app, because I also need to unzip .rar files, however it doesn't seem to correctly unzip the icons in .zip files. If I unzip it with Archive Utility.app it works perfectly.

Thanks for the suggestion!
