Iphone 4 went to black screen after call and won't turn back on

Fully charged overnight, now phone went to black screen and won't turn on. Made an appointment for tonight at the Genius bar, but really need the phone today for work if anyone has a solution.

The genius bar said they had not heard of the problem. Diagnostics showed everything was fine with the phone. Initial install was done by using a backup - they recommended we restore then set up the phone as a "new" phone - we will try that this weekend - i am curios if the people with this problem set up their phones with a backup or as new...

I have a similar issue, but from bringing the phoen from sleep.

Intermitently when I try to wake the phone up by pressing home buttom, nothing happens. The phone basically freezes and only pressing teh home and on/off switch together for 20 secs reboots the phone.

Here is what I have tried - which non works

1. Restored iphone from 3G backup - failed
2. Put IOS4 back om and setup iPhone as new device and sync'd up apps manually etc - failed
3. when iPhone has frozen tried to call the number - nothing happens
4. when iPhone has frozen tried to take out sim - nothing happens
5. when iPhone has frozen tried to hook up to itunes - nothing happens
6. tried to switch off delay passcode etc and screen auto brightness - fails

What I have noticed is that when the iPhone has froxen the batter looses about 3%+ straight away and the usage no longer reports (not until next full charge).

If Genius Bar has not heard about this it concerns me. And it is not an error you can just pull out of the bag! O2 have stated they will replace the phone when its abck in stock!

@ yancy9 did you purchase applecare?

For others with this issue, my new iphone 4 will go to blank screen and will not reset. I can still voice command call people, but it often calls different numbers than I request. I have figured out that I can hold down the top button for around 20 seconds, then swipe my finger where normally it would say "slide to power off" and it turns the phone off and then I can turn it back on. Obviously this is not ideal. I too loaded settings from a previous phone onto my new one.

then why are they replacing phones ? the new phones dont have a newer version of sw - or we would hear about it.

i turn off the vibrate tabs and it hasnt happended in 5 days.
it isnt the proximity sensor because im not near the phone when it happens. i walk by it and its black and vibrating. i can reset it by trying a bunch of things in a few minutes but i dont know the sequence that works yet.

I've been having the same problem recently... have you tried a hard reboot (recovery?)? press on/off and home & hold for like 20 seconds; apple logo should show up & things should be fine.

This has happened to me like 5 times though, so there seems to be something wrong somewhere...

This happened to me and I had a bad app. Removed it, and it stopped happening. Then the iOS 4 version of the app came out, updated to it, and it now works. This takes time to diagnose, but try to remember what app you were using when it happens, and maybe you can clear it up. Not saying this will cure it, just saying it's one of the cures.

Yes, I bought the applecare, but since the phone is so new I assume it'd be covered even without it...

I like the "rogue app" theory!--wish I'd thought of that before going through the trouble of getting the replacement.
Just to be clear, the trouble was the bus ride to the Apple store; no trouble at all at the store.

"then why are they replacing phones?"
I think they replaced it because I seemed pretty worried about it and they had no idea what was going on. Customer's always right sort of thing, no?

Same thing happens to me very frequent recently, more than 8 times a day, even the only app I used are just the build in Mail. Sometime it also went to black screen again in a few minutes after I reboot it up by holding 20 seconds of the power button. It seems it still happens to some people even they update to 4.02. I'm thinking to replace it after trying changing settings to factory default.

I had the freeze problem 5-10 times per day until I had the inspiration to set the auto-lock feature to "never". Never had any problem since - probably the best named function Apple ever came up with ...
Of course, it requires locking the phone manually when not used; compared to the excruciating pain of several hard resets per day, this is minor nuisance, however.
I hope it will work for you too.

Had the exact same problem on my iPhone 4 under iOS 4.0 and 4.01. Updated to 4.1 and problem still exists. I too suspect this is an app or iOS bug, not a hardware failure since so many people are having the same problem. Replacing the phone probably won't help.

I have found that doing a hard reset (Click and hold Home/Sleep) for 10 seconds twice in a row will get an Apple Logo and reboot. Then it works fine.

I most often have it happen overnight when not using the phone for several hours. Doesn't matter whether it is plugged in for charging or not.

Going to the genius bar tonight, but I'm not hopeful.

I just bought the iphone4 4.0.1 OS 32GB, 4 hours ago. It was working fine for 3 hours and with out any reason the screen went black (no app was on, it was in my hand in home screen). I tried to reset it with sleep + home button for 10 sec, but the logo would appear for a millisecond and go away, and still I can hear the unlock and lock sounds but no display. I did this for 20 times with no luck. At the end I returned it to t-mobile, and guess going to receive a new one tomorrow. But what if the new one has the same problems, is it software bug or something else. Please advise... Does the 4.1 iOS fix this black screen of death?
