the real reason for bad reception PART 2!

This is the second part to this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475309&tstart=0&start=1035

*BREAKING UPDATE:*

My iPhone 4 still exhibits signal gain when I'm at work and I hold it!

Haha.

Anyway, since Apple kindly locked out the other thread because 100k+ views were starting to give legitimacy to the reception issue let us press on and continue to discuss.

But seriously guys...tell me about your sim-reseting/bumper placing/ducktape solutions for my problem! //sarcasm

*Partial Solutions Identified*
-Bumpers: Helps to varying degrees, but not much.
-Popsicle Stick: Complete fix for those that like the Popsicle stick style.
-Sim removing: doesn't work
-Casting Voodoo on phone: inconclusive
-Returning Phone: Only Real fix at the moment.

I'll copy this over to th new thread... the second I put my response up they locked the thread

.....................

If it's of any help I have an iPhone 3GS and I updated to OS4 last week and since then I've had my signal drop completely on a number of occasions which never happened before on my version 3 s/w

I've ordered my iPhone 4 and hope to get it in a few weeks time by which time I also hope they have this issue fixed with a firmware/software patch.

I dont deny for one second that there isn't an ariel band issue on the iPhone 4, it seems very real, however I also suspect there are some s/w gremlins that have been introduced that have exaserbated the problem.

It's very strange to see the phone with all 5 bars lit and a full 3G signal to then see it saying "searching" for no reason (given it's just sitting on my office desk and hasn't changed position)

I also see they haven't implemented the full Bluetooth functionality yet, still no ability to skip tracks, but hey ho at least I can change the volume now ... I can live with that as long as it comes eventually. However I could never live with a phone that doesn't let me phone people .... crazy. There is a limit to how much users should have to put up with.

Maybe the batch that comes in a few weeks time will be better. "

I can see this getting locked for similar nonsensical reasons, however good on you. The bigger the visibility of this, the more Apple have to take note. Whether they act on it or not - well... There's the question.

I think; if a thread on this matter is closed; a new one should be opened right away with more witty and also sensible banter.

Apple have yet to do anything other than to tell us there is no issue or to hold our phones right; or to give out free bumpers and then say they arent when they are but that aren't.

This reminds me of when... Oh hang on; I've never purchased a product that just simply doesnt work out of the box on a mass scale.

Good work !

I was saying to you that my 3G works fine on iOS4; just dog slow on the screen.

Signal never has been an issue for my 3G; and currently is no issue right now.

Sure its a little weaker than my nokia side by side; but no difference in iOS4 to my knowledge

Ah well, not my experience, very different for me. I wasn't responding to any particular part of the whole thread, it was just an observation I've had. My 3G and signal has been much worse on my 3GS since the upgrade, so I'm willing to bet they've introduced some gremlins in OS4 that wern't there before. If that's the case then hopefully a firmware/software patch might go part way to fixing some of this.

Still pretty lame to release a bit of kit or OS when it's not fully tested.

You're right, when the Signal's there it's great, but it now seems to go from full on to off at very regular intervals now and that's on a 3GS

That may be one of the reception problems but for us (my husband and myself) the problem was no data reception at all. No internet, no email, no apps that rely on internet like mapping. We both had our phones replaced and both phones did the same thing. The iPad and iPhone would be sitting on a table, no hands touching the iPhone. It would read five strong bars yet no matter how hard we tried it would not take us to the internet. We could not send each other emails. The iPad works fine from calling using Skype to emails, radio, downloading movies but we could not do that on the iPhone 4. We had the 3GS before the iPhone 4 and never had the problem of no data services. We're both on "unlimited data" accounts with AT&T. We bought bumpers - then we bought cases all to no avail.

My husband depends on his phone for his job and his clients were getting very angry. Calls would drop within a few seconds or calls would not make it through. You couldn't get to voicemail. The guys at the Genius bar confirmed the problem and replaced the iPhones. Same thing.

We returned the iPhone 4 two days ago and now trying to get AT&T to allow us to backout of their new 2-year contract. They are saying no unless we each pay $350. We're now looking at Apple's competition for a decent smartphone. Apple mucked this up and we're big Mac users. I don't think we will ever buy another iPhone from Apple.

(BTW, let's see how long it takes before Apple moderators remove this message.)

Observed something interesting on my iPhone. When the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the antenna reception significantly improves. Never drops below 4 bar even with my hand covering the black bar on left bottom side of the phone.

On a different note, had to create a new alias to post this message. Old alias was deleted looks like. May be because I posted my true experience with the tech-support 🙂

There are a lot of things that are enabled in the new OS on 3GS that aren't on my 3G. Maybe that's why mine appears to be just fine!

That said; it's proven that placing a conductive material over the two different antenna causes complete signal loss; even if it is just a tiny piece of metal and there is no human contact or blockage.

If Apple sort this via software fix; It's either going to be very dubious or a miracle.

Well, that isn't a fix for everyone. I am currently sitting in my office with full wifi and if I so much as breath near the metal bar I lose my 3G signal. So frustrating. I hate having to return this phone cause I like most of the other stuff about it, but not being able to use the actual phone or the data is kind of a big deal.

Apple appear to be concentrating on trying to keep this quiet rather than fixing it you see. We are all targets!

@Xav76
I'm from France too and in Paris too, but with Orange. For now, I never got to no signal when holding with the "death grip" and no protection. At worse I've gone from 3G to EDGE, and this even if the signal is already weak.

Also I've noticed that the incidence of the death grip is worse when I'm on 3G than when I'm on EDGE. If I'm on 3G, the incidence is of 3 to 4 bars, if I'm on EDGE, the incidence is of 1 to 2 bars at worse.

I am one 3GS owner who will not be 'upgrading' to the iPhone 4 anytime soon and Apple can count that as another customer lost due to their inability to take responsibility for the train wreck that is the iPhone 4. My friend has one and I held it in the exact way I always hold my phone (I'm righthanded, so I hold it in my left to use my right hand on the screen) and the signal disappeared in seconds. So this would be a problem to me. And I refuse to alter the way I hold my phone - and thus be uncomfortable when using it - just to accommodate a major error that Apple are not owning up to! Their arrogance simply astounds me and, to be perfectly honest, if their attitude towards their customers doesn't change, I can see it being very likely that I won't upgrade to any iPhone ever again.

About thread being locked on this forum. I can tell you, that it's a common behavior of moderator whenever a thread is starting to be too long. They just lock it up to avoid it to become far too big and indigest.

They never stop people from opening new following thread, you'll see that this thread will stay alive as long as it's not too big, and will be locked as soon as it's getting enough big to justify it.

This has nothing to do with Apple desire to quiet people on this issue or not, this is just a common rule applied by moderators here.

If Apple wanted to quiet us on this issue, they wouldn't have just locked the thread, they would have deleted it.
