FDF incompatibility with Safari/10.6 - Acrobat Pro & Reader Loop
We believe we've identified a problem with FDF (Forms Data Format) files and Safari 4+ in 10.6. When we download an FDF file and attempt to open it in either Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 or Adobe Reader 9 (both the newest, up-to-date versions), it opens Safari and rapidly switches between the two applications until manually quit.
We've tested this on 10.5.8 computers with Safari 4 and it works normally. We've tested FDFs from multiple sources as well, to confirm that the server is not the problem. We've changed the default file association between Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader without any luck. We've also changed the default browser to Firefox with no change, Safari still opens. We've tested both Safari 4 and Safari 5 on 10.6 and encountered the problem in both. We've tested multiple 10.6 computers, including a unibody 13" MacBook Pro and a previous-generation 15" MacBook Pro and both had the problem.
How to reproduce:
On a 10.6 Mac:
1) Download an FDF file, such as the one you can create here: http://koivi.com/fill-pdf-form-fields/ (you have to enter some text, click submit, then click Download at the top).
2) Double-click the FDF file from your desktop.
3) Observe that either Adobe Reader or Acrobat Pro will open and then switch to Safari, then back continuously.
Currently, our user has a workaround where they have to connect to a Windows server via Remote Desktop Connection. Our University uses FDFs fairly regularly for student/financial/HR forms and we expect this problem to occur more frequently as our users upgrade their computers to 10.6.
