Yes, this is indeed a problem. I was very impressed with my iPad 3 battery life when playing games and such. Really only a few percent drains per hour.

But with iBooks, the battery drains like someone poked a hole in it. I don't even switch pages often. I use the iPad as a screen when studying, for having a picture of the problem in front of me. Yesterday, the battery went from 60% to 3% when just lying there displaying a static PDF-document. This was in about 4 hours. It doesn't even drain that much when playing games. I think iBooks needs a check on this issue. Does it redraw the page even if you don't flip or zoom?

By the way (sorry for double post) - just look at the amount of views on this thread. I believe many many people have this problem but just can't be bothered to write about it.

I too have the same issue.  My iphone 4s and ipod touch 4g are draining battery fast without using the iBook app.  It is not even running in the background. iBook app was the last app I have installed on both my devices for the past 2 days and I have seen drastic loss in battery for both iphone 4s and ipod touch 4g. I hope this can be fixed.

I can't understand this either, iBooks drains more battery than a movie and is worse than surfing the Internet! I've just downloaded the Kindle app, is it better than iBooks for battery?

I was a happy iPad 2 user for two years, until the lastest iBook update.

Now iBook drains my battery really really really fast. I had a fully charged iPad in the morning, and use it in class for reading PDF documents. In three hours time, I only had 30%. battery left.  I never had this problem before. I used to enjoy the 10 hours reading time iPad offers.

Can someone please fix the issue.

It seems the issue from 2011 is back with the latest v4.1 iBooks.  I have noticed a substantial difference in battery consumption between iOS7's iBooks and the iOS8 version.  I submitted an enhancement request for iBooks.  Hopefully they will find the culprit.

I have a 5s and have this problem too, I just updated to iOS 8.1.3 so we'll see if it makes any difference.  I've been reading books with iBooks app for sometime now and only recently have I noticed how quickly it now drains the battery.  At this point this app drains my battery faster than any other App I have.  Even in airplane mode it drains it extremely fast. I don't understand why it uses more battery than listening to music or watching movies. Hopefully it is explained for fixed in the near future as the iOS updates continue to be released.

Glad to have found this "old" thread. My iPad mini drained almost completely over the last few nights. I have been reading in iBooks in bed and just closing the cover to turn the iPad off when I was going to sleep. Wake up in the morning to find battery down to 8-10%. Does not happen with the Kindle app, so going to stick to that in future - not good news if Apple want to sell eBooks.

I just found this thread and wish I'd looked earlier.  The battery life on my 3-year-old fourth generation iPad was getting shorter and shorter (draining as much as 20% or more per hour), but it wasn't until recently that I connected the problem with iBooks.  Before making that connection I talked with Apple Support multiple times, had diagnostics done, even did a complete restoraction to factory settings, with no improvement.  The bizarre thing is that it never occurred to any of the Apple support advisors or folks at the "genius" bar that it might be an iBooks issue, suggesting that Apple isn't aware of the problem, or at least hasn't mentioned it to their support personnel.  I recently discovered the "battery" monitor under "Settings" and discovered that by far the biggest drain on my battery is. . . . iBooks.  Which is unfortunate, because I use my iPad a LOT for reading.  Have not yet compared to Kindle, but will now do so, although I like the functionality of iBooks better (e.g., the "Auto-Night Theme" option, and the fact that I can sort the order of my books manually within a category by dragging them into place -- haven't found a way to do that on Kindle).  Just thought I'd add my voice to those frustrated with this battery drain issue with iBooks, because it's absolutely real.

MAybe that's because not many people prefer iBooks to read, not that anyone else is having this problem. I too have this problem since I got my ipad air so it's also not related with software problem or ios updates. This is definetely an issue apple has to focus on as their own software runs bad on their own hardware. There is a guy claiming another app is using much less battery than ibooks for the same data. The only assumption here should be that the issue should be investigated by a technical, instead of community assumptions.
