Can OpenOffice.org be downloaded on iPad?

Hi, I would like to buy an iPad and I was wondering whether OpenOffice.org works on iPad. I even want to know whether iWork comes free of cost or we have to buy it. How do we load iWork or is it preinstalled???

Imac 3.06 GHz, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

The iPad can only use programs (called apps) that are available from the iTunes store. Open office does not have an app. However, there are some non-Apple apps that have some spreadsheet and word processing function. There may be a presentation one too.

The three Apple iWorks apps are available for $10 each. Like all apps, you have to get them through the iTunes app store. You an either get the apps directly downloaded to the iPad or you can download them to your computer and sync them to your iPad.

OpenOffice is not available for the iPad at this time.

*iWork for iPad.*
iWork productivity applications make it easy to create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions, and formulas on your iPad. Based on the iWork suite for Mac but completely redesigned for iPad, these apps — Keynote, Pages, and Numbers — are the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. They’re both easy to use and extremely powerful. +_*And they’re available for just $9.99 each from the App Store.*_+

For the most part, you primarily get apps for the iPad through the iTunes App Store, rather than downloading & installing like you would on a laptop or desktop.

I use the whole auntie of iWork apps on my iPad and my desktop machine. You will find the iPad versions limited due to it only having 256mb ram. Which is understandable. But if you decide you absolutely require the full power of OOo, you may want to write them and ask if an iPad app is in the works and ask for details.

I have not tried to use documents to go yet, mostly because I am completely happy with the iWork offerings so far for what I need to do on my iPad.
