canon pixma ip4000R driver problems

I've been reading through the various driver problems regarding this and the canon ip5000 printers, but I remain confused and wanted to post a few questions directly.

My experience:
1. I have the canon pixma iP4000R printer (wireless).
2. I loaded the print driver from cd and set up printer, and after some network confusion was able to print over the wireless network to the printer.
3. My print paper settings seemed to be japanese names, and I had no 4x6 option, so I deleted the driver to start again.

Qeustions:
1. Now when the printer is concected by by USB, and I try to "add" the printer, the "add" button is greyed out untill I choose a GIMP driver. What is a GIMP driver? Why is there no driver that matches the name of my pritner? Why isn't the GIMP driver on the cd or on their website? I must have chosen a similar sounding printer driver name last time, but I can't seem to find one that works now.
2. When not connected by by USB, during my previous setup, it would find the "canon ip4000R" network printer that I could add. Now the printer setup utility finds this but says "unsupported printer" and does not let me add?

Any help would be appreicated.

Thanks,

Tony

I have this same printer, but I don't have any of your problems. If I remember correctly, when you initially set up the printer, you have to connect via USB first. Once you've installed the drivers and printed successfully, you can "add" the printer as a wireless printer.

I would delete the printer from the menu and start all over again. (not just the driver)

Thanks Joyce,

Are you using an Airport wireless network?
Do you have an option for 4x6 borderless photo printing?

I've tried deleting everthying (from printer list and the print driver itself. I wonder if I deleted too much, becuase now I am getting the "unsupported" printer when I try to add.

Do you recall if you added it as a USB printer first, and then added as wireless? I ask, becuase if I try to add as USB it asks me for a GIMP driver (what ever that is), or I can't select "add". When I had it working before, I beleive I selected a GIMP driver (though one with my printer name was not available).

Tony,

search for Gutenprint @ sourceforge and download the latest Gutenprint drivers. Gutenprint is GIMP print renamed and updated and includes a specific IP4000 driver.

I used this driver for my ip5200 and it fixed the printing at a5 size problem, although it does not appear to support all fonts and tray loading. Only single sheet feed.

Tony,

I'm using a D-link (Di-624) wireless network.

If I recall correctly, the setup directions said to set the printer up as a USB printer first (make sure you connect it with a USB cable). Then, once you get it printing correctly, you disconnect the cable and connect it via ethernet. I can look up my directions if you'd like. - (I keep everything!)

In the Paper Handling menu, I get the option "Scale to fit Paper Size", where I can select 4x6 borderless. Since I've never actually printed this size, I can't tell you how well it works. However, I do print scrapbook pages in 8 1/2 x 11" borderless pages! And they come out beautifully!
