iPhoto cannot recognize jpeg format

I am trying to import several images into iPhoto that are in jpeg format. The Help Folder indicates that jpeg is supported by iPhoto. However, every time I attempt to import the image (not photos, but jpegs), I get a message saying, "the following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)" Please help!

Hi. I'm also having this same problem. I'm trying to transfer pictures from files on my MacBook Pro to iPhoto and every time I try to do this, I get the same message ("The following file could not be imported (The file is in an unrecognized format")) All of my pictures are in jpeg, but when I tried to save one as gif and add it to iPhoto, the same message appeared. HELP!

If you want to make sure iPhoto is working you can try import a desktop pattern from Macintosh HD > Library > Desktop Pictures.

If that won't import than you may have an issue with iPhoto. If it works then something is going on with these images / your camera. Do you ever reformat your camera's media card? Using a card over and over and never formatting it can have adverse affects on the images you store on that card.

Tips on digital camera use:
_Ensure your camera has a full charge on the battery before you import (Or run off of AC if possible).
_Ensure the date and time on the camera are correct before importing.
_If you are using a media card reader and are getting regular failures, try using a different reader or the camera itself (The same is true about importing directly from the camera. Try a reader instead.)
_Plug the camera directly into the computer with a solid connection, no loose cables. Don't use a hub.
_Reformat the camera's media card using the camera itself between uses.
_Alternate between multiple media cards during photo shoots (trips, etc) so that if one card goes bad (they are just little bits of plastic after all) you don't lose the entire shoot.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where are these photos located? Open one with Preview and save it as a new jpg image, different name, etc. See if the new image will import. If it does you can download and try this Automator workflow application that I created to convert image files to jpeg and embed the sRGB profile: +*Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile*+. You can download if from Toad's Cellar.

Unzip the application and, as a test, drag a copy of one of the problem files onto it. Then when the process is done import the photo. If all goes well you can process all of your problem files at one time.

Apple what do you have to say?

Do you remember the Terms of Use at all? You agreed to them when you signed up and there's a link to them on the right hand side of every page. As they explain, this is a forum for Users to discuss technical issues with other Users. Apple's developers aren’t here. They don’t promise to read anything here.

Image Capture is located in the Applications folder. Launch it and connect the camera. If IC can see the camera you should see the photos on the card and be able to get them into a folder on the Desktop.

As far as a card reader you'll have to buy one. I got mine at WalMart for $10. Plug the card reader into a USB port, take the card out of the camera and insert into the reader.

I'm not sure these methods will work. Other Kodak camera users have reported that they were unable to use them. That's not to say you shouldn't try. In any case report the problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
