updated, now cant vnc/screen share but can ssh

Brand new snow leopard server install. Did some light updating of settings (modified hostname enabled services) and the initial system update to 10.6.4. Restarted and now I CAN SSH to the machine but i CANNOT vnc/screen share to it... it just times out fails to connect and says to make sure that screen sharing is enabled.

Tried the suggestions in this doc but no luck
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370

Anyone experience the same? Any tips? Thanks in advance

Edit: I noticed other services are down like web as I had a default page loading before via ip in browser, not sure how to get back into VNC/Screen share to start up and check services 😟

Tried ipfw set disable and ipfw list to see if 5900 was being blocked and it didnt work.

Hey, thanks for your suggestion - I already disabled the firewall but nothing changes 😟

See my other post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11846132#11846132

Strange is the fact that not only ARD but also VNC is not working. Now the "verification fails" everytime I try to get a connection with ARD - the server is listed as offline and as such marked "black".

Unfortunately yes, and it reports back that the services has been restarted and is "running". Firewall is disabled. Cannot access the Server from another Client Machine with ARD, so it definetly has to do something with the 10.6.4 Update... SSH-Access is possible.

I also tried to access the system preferences on the server and enabled remote management for another user; it's still not possible to connect 😟

Really don't know what to try next - except waiting for 10.6.5?!

Roman,

To confirm, you can access the server via ssh port 22 correct? Because this is the exact same issue I experienced. Web, ARD and other services were down, I had to stop the firewall, then reconfigure it via ARD after the update.

Try and SSH to your machine and check ipfw and serveradmin
Let me know your progress

Hi there

Thanks, nothing seems to help 😟 Firewall is completely off ⚠ and so the server's listening on port 5900 (just verified ny nc-testing). I can access the server also with SA and SSH.

Everything is working fine but this stupid ARD. It seems that some kind of preference-files and/or directory entries of (local) user records where damaged by the update to 10.6.4...

I think there is nothing more to do than waiting for 10.6.5 and see what's happening then?!

Roman,

I know this is probably a no brainer, have you repaired permissions since you updated to Server 10.6.4?
I have been fussing with a mac mini server for the last month, its is my 1st mac based server and set up is so simple its hard if you know what I mean. In any case my RAD was working and i have been using it over the last week rather then sitting in a cramped corner where the old makeshift server is still being used. After I updated to 6.4 i ran permissions and noticed a warning on my SUID for remote management, thought nothing of it since it was still working. started up VPN now remote is dead so your not alone on this. /kickstart did not work for me either. If you haven't run permissions check them see it it helps and see if you have this line as well.

"Warning: SUID file 'System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent' has been modified and will not be repaired."

I got this error immediatly after running repairs after the upgrade. also i have this same error on my laptop running 10.6.4 (non server ed.) so it looks like a bug on apples end

Hi there

Thanks for your suggestion - I repaired the permissions several times after the update. But you're definitely right, I got this message too:

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired

Well, I think I'll check the permissions of this file on an older 10.6.3 system and compare them to the server's... I'll let you know if I get it - finally - done (without waiting for 10.6.5)...

All the best
Roman

Gxxfy,

Not sure how much this will help or if it just coincidence. I have a Mac Mini server and lost access to the screen sharing after enabling the VPN. I have scoured the forums for a fix and not found anything and had all but given up on it. Recently I set up a FM11 (filemaker) server on the mini was able to access the FM server but not the files. Did some digging in the set up and checked the ports it needs access to. After activating ports 5003, 16000 and 16001. the problem was fixed for both the filemaker issue as well as returning screen sharing privileges. Again this could be completely coincidental but at this point I am not seeing any other solutions out there so try this. Server Preferences: Security. Add a new service (give it a name you will recognize) open ports 5003, 16000, 16001. if it doesnt work delete the service and your back to square 1.
