How do I delete messages from the Console Utility?

I can't move any console messages to Trash. How is this done?
Can i limit the number of messages or set a date time limit?
Can I uninstall or delete the Console Utility and download a clean version?

open console, click "show log list" (unless log list is already showing), highlight log entry you want to
delete, control-click (or right click if secondary mouse button is mapped), select "move to trash".

Optionally you can highlight log entry and then click the trash icon on the console window toolbar.
If the trash can is not showing on the toolbar, control-click on tool bar > customize toolbar > drag
trash icon onto toolbar.

Why would you want to? Console is a reader for various log files generated by the OS and applications. These are just the output of the various log files.

What's a "clean version"?

The log files are found in the Logs folders of the various Library folders.

Here's a tip: if you don't understand what you're throwing away, don't do it.

If you look carefully you will see that "All Messages" and "Console Messages" are actually the results of search of a number of individual log files. Consequently you cannot move them to trash, but as been previously pointed out you can clear the display if you want to make a clean slate to observe some issue - this can be useful but doesn't "trash" any messages.

Under the heading of Files in in the log list you can if you select a log file move it to trash. (Note the list of log files etc may be hidden - it is exposed by the Hide/Show Log List button in the upper right of the Console window.]

But as has been previously noted you really don;t want to do that.

The Maintenance scripts that run daily, weekly and monthly do perform house keeping on some of the logs. If your machine is not on all the time, you may want to run the scripts manually.

For more information on the scripts, what they do and how to run them see this [ link|http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html].
