iPhone 4 jumpy video playback

I'm having issues with the video playback quality. Of course, video playback from iPhone 4 itself is excellent, but when I import to iPhoto, etc., the video playback is jumpy to say the least. Is this a phone issue or a QuickTime issue? Thanks!

Well, this is ridiculous - 'well i never' is absolutely right about the orientation of the video in VLC but I have an iPhone 4S and iOS5 so I am using the volume control as the shutter button. Obviously the shutter button is supposed to be at the top of ANY camera but video shot this way plays upside down in VLC. But it plays smoothly! It also plays smoothly in iMovie full screen mode so it's not a limitation of the hardware.

It must be iPhoto's poor implementation of Quicktime surely - it seems to know which is the correct orientation and shows the video the right way up no matter how it was shot but it's not a fix since playback is choppy in either orientation.

If you select the movie in iPhoto and go to File >Reveal in Finder and double click to open it in Quicktime, it will play much better if not perfectly.

An even better solution is to ditch iPhoto and use Google Picasa - it's free, works faster, has more features and plays video nicely. It even has an Import from iPhoto option in the file menu.

I am having the same problem !

I used to have the iphone 4 and it was never a problem but since i have had the iphone 4s the videos keep jumping and out of sync with the sound. It also has a green line at the top of the video.

I was told that its because the 4s records in 1080p and not 720p like the iphone 4.(THIS IS RUBBISH)

I have tried other players other than quick time, like Real player, Windows Media player and even through Nero.

Still no luck ! Then i uploaded the orginal file to YouTube and the play back is fine.

So i think its a codec issue that Apple need to sort out, because YouTube have to decoded it to their codec and like i say it runs nice and smoothly in sync with the sound (EVEN AT 1080p)

Come on Apple !!!!

Let me add another user with the same problem. Just got a 4s and the video plays at half speed on WMP and is jumpy on latest QT. It looks like the video is lagging on QT, but jumps ahead to catch-up with the audio every second or so. I also tried the VLC player and it didn't play at all.

I've seen older threads describing a similar problem with the iphone 4. I wonder if the video recorded on the iphone exceeds the current implementation of the players/codecs. It may be that the 720p video from the ip4 plays but not the 1080p. I don't have access to a ip4, but my girlfriend has a ip3. I'll try that

I have a Compaq Presario w/ AMD V120 2.2 GHz processor and ATI video

Went to the Apple store close to me. They tried my file on a Mac Air with the same results (it was jumpy). They then tried another IP4s on the same Mac Air and it still jumped. They then tried my file on a top of the line MAC (sorry, I didn't get the model) and it seemed to play ok (although I think I still saw some jumps, it was definitely better).

Next they converted my file to MP4 using a program called Handbrake. It played fine on the Air Mac after conversion. I told them about this thread and the senstivity to camera orientation. The rep didn't believe it but tried it anyway and - sure enough - when he tried it vertical it was better and upside down it was good.

Bottom line - at least this rep believed there was an issue and was going to elevate it to engineering. Hopefully we'll see something from Apple describing the requiremenmts for playback.

This is ridiculous! Same thing here, too. Do you guys also get this "Alert" for every video file?

"The photo “IMG_0102.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."

Why can't it be found? It's on the phone! Are we sure it's just a Quicktime issue? Maybe I'm supposed to buy the new iLife11 with the new iphoto. I have the old iphoto. Still, all of this should be backward compatible. Apple used to be on top of all of this stuff, now everything seems rigged to force you to buy the next version of everything, including the new OS, which is required to do icloud.

Shouldn't your video and pics automatically save to iphoto when you sync your phone with itunes, anyway? Is that too much to ask?

Worst of all, I elected to "delete originals" when saving to iphoto as I had 50 pics and videos, and since the images are massive (with no option to take smaller pics or lower res video) I can barely fit much more on my phone. Now they've all been deleted, and crappy, jumpy files have been saved to iphoto, and I have no idea if the original files can ever be restored. Very very poor stuff from what is supposed to be a good company. And I've seen these problems going back for 2 years now. No excuse.

In ITunes, have the ticked the box in the settings that syncs the pictures?

Same goes with music, apps and everything else.

ITunes defaults to all sync off unless you tell it you want to sync the specific items.

The other way to copy the pictures is to open up the 'My Computer' and you will see your IPhone there. Just select all, copy and paste it into a file and that's it. You can open them up on your computer anytime.

I have been searching for a solution to this problem as well.

My iPhone 4s is FULL but I am terrified to delete any videos from my phone that I've saved to my PC because their playback in Quicktime 7.7.2 or VLC is choppy/jumpy/stuttered and I don't know if the file is saving properly and just not playing back well, or if the file is corrupt and therefore the only good version of the video exists on my phone, You follow?

I need to know how to save the video files to my PC so I can delete them from my iPhone. Am I able to change the settings on my phone so the video files are so HUGE? Is that part of the problem? Some are 30000, 50K or more KB big.

Any good solutions yet...?

Are you running Windows or Mac?

If Windows, here is a real easy way to transfer them, including your photos.

Attach the IPhone to the computer. Go to "My Computer"

In there, you will find your phone is one of the connected devices.

Double click, and there are all your photo's and movies. Just go "edit" then "select all".

Right click, and go to copy.

Make a file on your desktop and rename it to what you want. I have IPhone Pics.

Open the file and right click, then go paste.

It will copy all your pictures and videos across.

Unfortunately, it will still play choppy on your computer.

Success!

When converting to .avi (or .wmv) with Format Factory the video runs smoothly and with no jumps/lags or slowness.

You can also convert it to .mp4 but the quality will drop.

With QuickTime I had lags/jump and slowness, so apple please reffer to this and fix it (I have a 3 ghz cpu 2giga ram and 80g and a 512m graphic card hard drive with win xp pro sp3)

I tried importing with Image Capture to iPhoto and the video failed to import at all. I imported to a file on the drive and tried to play it with Quicktime 10 and it was still jumpy. The quality in VNC is very poor altogether. iMovie also has the same jumps as iPhoto. At this point I can't play my iphone videos on my Mac in any tool.

Running Mac OS 10.6.8 on an MBA, with iPhoto 9.2.3 and Quicktime 10.
