iTunes not adding new songs

My iTunes has been extremely slow since the last update. It has always been a little slow to open up but now I'm lucky if it even opens. I reinstalled iTunes and restarted my computer more than once. Now I get it to open most of the time, but when I try to add songs to the library it freezes and doesn't respond. Any suggestions?
