Incompatibility between iPAD and MAC OS X 10.4.11?

Hi,

Just bought an iPAD yesterday. I was very excited about getting started with it, but when I plugged it into my iMac... the system tells me MAC OSX 10.4.11 does not support iPAD and that I need at least MAC OSX Leopard to be able to connect my iPAD!!! I am sure there would not be such an issue with a PC so I am really frustrated. Any suggestion here from someone?
Can I upgrade from Mac OSX 10.4 to 10.5 or even 10.6?
Thanks for your usual support,

G

Generally speaking, if you have a Mac with a PowerPC processor, you can upgrade to 10.5. If you have an Intel processor, you can go to 10.6. Some really old machines can not upgrade, though - check the requirements for 10.5 / 10.6.

10.5 is no longer for sale, but you should be able to find it used at the usual places, e.g. eBay. Upgrading is a good idea anyway, since Apple no longer supports 10.4, so you won't get any security updates for it.

So, I have just spent £700.00 on an iPad, I have an iPhone 3Gs and a =n iMac PPC G5 running the latest Tiger operating system - I even upgraded to iTunes 9.2 to ensure that I had the latest software to enable compatibility with my iPad ready for activation!

Plug my iPad in - you can't use your iPad with this version of the OS! WHAT! this has to be a joke, No - but it runs fine on a PC with running XP an operating system launced in October 2001! I bought my mac in March 2006! and have no need to upgrade yet, yes I hear you shout XP service pack 3 - OK SP3 out in 2006 but THIS IS A FREE UPGRADE!

I have many mac products and have slated windows and PC's for many a year - but this infuriates me I don't understand why an operating system limits this product when the latest interface software 'iTunes' runs fine on that older said OS! What the F ** surely it's not to make extra money as I can't purchase the OS X 10.5 from Apple and my Hardware won't run the latest Apple OS. I will have to wait till I get home to activate my iPad with my laptop running XP!

One not very happy Apple customer. - I think apple should make available OS X 10.5 a FREE download just like service pack 3 for windows XP!

I think apple

Apple did publish the system requirements for the iPad on Jan. 27, so that potential customers would have a couple months warning about the need to upgrade to 10.5. But that doesn't help people who don't think about checking such things before buying. I suggest you let Apple know your views on the issue via their feedback channel:

Service pack 3 is not a whole new Windows OS. It's an update, nothing more.

10.5 (Leopard) is a complete OS update. It would be like Microsoft giving you a copy of Vista to update your XP.

The latest Tiger operating system

Tiger is over 5 years old. Apple stopped updating it 3 years ago.

By 'latest' I mean 10.4.11 - not Apples latest OS - for which every now and again there is another patch so - they still support it! XP is 9 years old and iPad works on that! if someone could explain to me why it is physically not possible to support under Tiger then great but iTunes works perfectly well on Tiger and this is the software you need to 'drive' the iPad! if you needed iTunes 9.1 to sync with your new iPad and iTunes 9.1 and above didn't work on Tiger I could sort of understand the argument.

Tiger is apparently missing some of the features to make it compatible to the A4 processors and architecture used in the iPad and iPhone4.

An occasional security patch here and there doesn't mean that the OS is being actively supported. In the case of XP, Microsoft is still selling it on a limited basis whereas Apple stopped selling 10.4 three years ago.

Thank you Tamara, that makes more sense, if the iPhone also needs 10.5 then this would look like a hardware issue - as they both use the same one (iPad and - iPhone 4 that is)

I am currently looking round for a copy of 10.5 but looks like it will be another £60 to boot on top of the already £700 of iPad - I didn't factor that in.

Try eBay. I think you might find it somewhat cheaper.

BTW, Leopard is a lot more stable than Tiger. You're going to get better performance, more or less.

Or you could buy a new Mac, and get Snow Leopard for free. 😀
