Kerberized NFS home folders without being an OD Master/Replica?

Does an OS X server have to be either an OD Master or Replica in order to Kerberize NFS?

I'm trying to run kerberized NFS home folders from a file server that is joined to our OD, but is not a replica of it, and it's not working. The clients log in OK, but say "The home folder for user "x" isn't located in the usual place or can't be accessed."

If I open a Terminal at this point and cd into /Network/Servers/servername/path/to/home, then I can see the NFS mount point which appears to be owned by the user logged in, but I can't cd into the mount point, I get "Permission denied".

Any suggestions?

All clients and servers are 10.6.4.

Mac OS X (10.6)
