I need a hosts file for some sites. Where is it? Is it a text file?

Hope someone can help.

I need to have a hosts file for some work related sites - the Windows version is system32\drivers\etc.

Someone told me that there is an 'etc' folder in OSX that is the direct equivalent...I can't find it? Anyone help? Also in windows the host file is just a text file...is it the same for OSX?
Thanks

David

Edit the file /private/etc/hosts with a tool such as TextWrangler. To access the folder, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /private/etc/ as the path.
