Regularly (more than once a day) emptying the cache will help with that. Also:

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:

If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)

Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:

If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.

You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2

HI,

Go go Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any Extensions installed, turn them OFF.

Also, Safari third party add-ons can cause the problems you are describing.

Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

And try resetting Safari from the Safari menu bar. Safari / Reset Safari - select the top 5 boxes.

Relaunch Safari.

If nothing has helped, login to another user account on your Mac. Try Safari there.

I've just started having this same problem. It's been randomly happening for about a week. I'm on a MacBook Pro running Leopard, Safari 5.0.1. It happens at the office and at home, on WiFi and over Ethernet. It's also happened using the Webkit nightly, both on its own and while Safari was running, and neither were necessarily stuck at the same time.

I'm having no problems with Firefox or other network apps.

No extensions. I use Click To Flash, but the problem persists with it uninstalled. Reset has no effect. I've trashed the preferences, disabled RSS, unchecked "Warn when visiting a fraudulent website," disabled JavaScript, disabled styles, disabled images, disabled MobileMe syncing.

This problem is not affecting other accounts.

It's very strange, and very frustrating.
