Clean, default install of 10.6.x installs NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave on Intel

When one does a clean install of OSX 10.6.x, it installs NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave in /Your Intel Machine/Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins. I was wondering if anyone knew why? It's version 10.1.1r16 released by Macromedia in 2004. It does not show up in the Safari Installed Plug-Ins window, and could be slowing Safari?

Also, the default, clean install of OSX 10.6.x installs /Your Intel Machine/Mac Hd/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave.bundle -- and does anyone know why that is? the Shockwave.bundle is version 10.1 and was released by Macromedia in 2004 also.

They both say "(PowerPC)" in their respective Get Info windows.

Does anyone have any knowledge on why these two PowerPC Plug-Ins are installed on Intel Machines during a clean install of 10.6.x?

I really want to throw them away, esp. the Safari Plug-In, but am unsure if it's safe to do so. any help/knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for your reply carolyn 🙂 i did remove the NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder and it seemed to speed up safari. but i really want to know why apple is including a seven-year old plugin from macromedia for safari and a seven-year old Shockwave.bundle from macromedia in the hard drive library folder when one does a clean, default install of 10.6.x on an apple intel machine. why would apple install these two powerpc macromedia things on new intel machines that can't even use rosetta? it's a real quandary for sure.

macromedia is now owned by adobe, and adobe shockwave and adobe flash cause macs to run very, very hot. plus they drain batteries very fast on modern, low-power polling devices (like your macbook air, ipad, iphone and ipods -- nice carolyn 🙂 ) i still have flash installed for the time being but i'm really longing for the day when the html5 video tag, or something else, can take its place.

honestly, thanks for replying 🙂 but the question still stands.

oh and about my last comment -- apple won't let adobe mess with your nice ipad, iphone and ipods -- so it's just that sweeet macbook air flash is draining the battery life out of at a breakneck pace. but i wouldn't worry yourself none too much -- just have fun. you could install ClickToFlash from macupdate.com --i use it and it works really well. and youtube has a page now where you can opt in to see their videos with the html5 tag. http://www.youtube.com/html5

but my question still stands… i'll ask someone at the macgenius bar 🙂
