See if you can force the phone into recovery mode:

Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, itunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. In your case, setup as "new".

If you set up as "new", all data on your phone will be deleted. Your phone will look just like it came out of the box. You can try restoring from backup first, followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, but if your problem is related to corrupt data on your phone, restoring from backup will merely restore the problem.

ok, i feel really stupid now lol.

i just remembered the reset mode you can do on the iphone by holding the home button and the power button, wait till you see the apple logo and wait for the phone to restart. This actually worked besides trying to charge it, turn it off and plugging it into my pc to sync with itunes.

thanks ever so much for your help, very much appreshiated.

Hey guys,
I was with my friend who had the same problem with his iPhone 4 today and as I was researching the problem I tried all the tricks and nothing seemed to work.
Until I came across some info that suggested the problem was with a proximity sensor.
Basically his phone was on(when someone called it would ring on their end instead of going straight to voicemail), but not respond tto touch or anything.
So I held the power button and slid my finger across the screen as if to "switch" it off even though the screen was blank and waited before holding the button again to turn it back on.
Once I did this it booted back up as if nothing happened.
Hope this is the same problem, good luck.

I didn't remember the reset mode for my iPhone, I was inially trying the advise from wjosten futher up the page, which didn't seem to work by just holding down the home button. I then tried holding down the power and home button together as another option and it worked, the apple appeared on the phone and iTunes recognized it, so maybe it's a mix between the too.!?

I did what kylem31 describe in their post and it work perfectly. Phone came back on and all of my data, pictures, contacts, messages everything was still there. Push the power and home button at the same time. I got the apple logo and release the button. The phone started working normally. Will it do it again and I not be so lucky; only time will tell. Thanks, it working now. I'm receive text as I'm typing. Good day to all.
