Export takes FOREVER!!!!!

So I have composed a 3 minute animation with basically a bunch of text boxes and a camera moving through them. The issue is it is taking absolutely forever and ever to compress. I am wondering if anybody knows the reason. I have an 8-core mac pro and i have a quick cluster set up. With the cluster this is what my progress looks like:

I also have a Matrox CompressHD card that I love and it usually compresses very very fast but using the card this is what i get

which is even worse!!!!

I mean is it possibly because it has to be fully rendered and 3 minutes is a long time for animations or what?

I'm going to anticipate that everyone is going to ask how complex your project is.

Shadows, DOF, Motion Blur, Reflections, Lighting?... these will all add major complexity. I've had 20 second animations take 15 hours to render on account of using ALL of these.

3 minutes is a pretty long animation by most standards. My personal belief is that you should break down animations into logical parts that are shorter, then assemble them. Not only is this a stylistic/design method, it's easier on the hardware.

Have you tried exporting your sequence at "normal" without motion blur and all the goodies? This should normally take about 10 minutes...

Well you know, I have most of those turned on but I don't think i am using any of them. It is basically just a black background and i have different blocks of white text hanging out in 3D space and i just have the camera travel from one block to the next synced up with audio of me talking. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like. Maybe i should try turning all of those options off and trying to export that way and seeing what its like. Maybe that is all that it is. I noticed it took significantly less time without audio too so that might be adding in more time.

I just now tried removing all of the "goodies" as you call them, reduced the size to 50%, reduced the resolution and it took about 14 minutes so i think that's what it is.....just a lot of time.

I am going to remove the lighting and reflections since i dont have any anyways (background is transparent) and maybe that will cut it down. I am surprised that it takes the Matrox Card longer than without though. Must be a bug there or it just doesn’t like motion as much who knows. I posted on their forum but haven't heard back.

Thank you

one thing i am noticing is that motion is only using 100% processor power 😟
I tried to do another cluster but now it isn't working.....ugh
it looked like it was going to be faster but the time remaining keeps increasing. It is now at 1 hour elapsed, 7 hours remaining. I think this will creep up more. Any tips to get motion to use more processor power?

Ok so i cancelled my export again and i changed it to render normal and now it seems like it is going to take a reasonable amount of time. 10 minutes in fact so you hit the nail on the head with that one 🙂
Thank you

If when you export the video card does the compression that would make sense why the matrox card wouldn't really help much at all. I do have a related question. I had upgraded my video card to the ATI Radeon 3870 but then I wanted a third monitor so i added in my old video card (so i now have two in there) the Radeon 2600 XT. My question is, how do i know motion is using my faster video card and not the slower one? Is there any way to tell?

Hm. Therein may lie the issue. As I've come to learn, two gphx cards is a big no-no for motion.

Disclaimer: Consider this anecdotal evidence is about my sstyem only, your mileage may vary but I doubt it.
That's not exactly true, but sort of. There are a few filters that will not function with more than one card installed but there is no overall impact on Motion's performance if you have two cards AS LONG AS YOU DON't have a montiro plugged into the second card. I had to pull my third and fourth monitors because of this weird little glitch. I had over-stimulated myself with an abundance of display space—for sure—but the organizational benefits were HUGE. Dropping back to two monitors was sad but I noticed a distinct improvement in the Motion interface but nothing in the time required to perform any specific task.

hmmmm, I'll do some more research on this online. Maybe I will try doing some benchtesting with and without the card to see if i notice a difference. I downloaded XBench and it scored a 227.27 for the quarts graphics test and 259.69 for the OpenGL Graphics Test.....not that this means much to me since i have nothing to compare it to and going on their website to compare systems is impossible pretty much.

Ok if I do this i will post back with my results

So I tried removing my second graphics card and it actually made it worse!!! With two graphics card in motion without audio my project runs at around 10 fps but when i tried taking out the second graphics card it went down to about 7 fps. Not a lot but significant i think. I also tried exporting a section of the animation and it took 3.5 minutes with two cards, but when i took out the other card it was exporting very slow and was going to take almost an hour!

So in summary, I believe this is normal and it is just that my video card, the 3870 although is adequate it is not the best of the bunch and reducing the render quality to normal made a huge difference. I was even able to add motion blur as well so that was good.

Thank you all for your help!
