You need to then purchase it as a ringtone. Purchasing a song for play is NOT the same as purchasing it as a ringtone. Licensing requires a separate purchase.

It's really lame. I own the CD of a song I wanted to make a ringtone out of but the way the iPhone ringtones work (PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE'S A WAY AROUND THIS!!), you have to have PURCHASED THE SONG from iTunes and then PURCHASED THE RINGTONE iTunes! And I legally own the CD. 😟

Is there a way to get ringtones from your own music or voice recordings? Like maybe your kid's voice or something. That would be cool...

Yes. Search the App Store. There are apps that will assist you in this.
