I just tried to install a noes hybrid hard drive, the momentus XT. I backed up my i7 MacBook pro and put in the drive. I cannot get past the opening apple screen. Why? If I put in the old drive it is fine. Dead drive

MacBook pro i7, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Have you installed an OS or anything else on the new drive? Did you format it correctly first? And what is a "noes" drive?

Sorry it was a typo. It its a seagate momentus xt . All I was told to do was use time cap and backup my currently installed drive then replace out with the new drive straight out of the box. Once installed turn back on and boot from osx disk and then format and so on. After getting everything swapped I insert osx disk hold down the command key on bootup and select to boot from osx disk. Once there it never gets past the whitish screen with the apple in the middle. After about 5_10 minutes I hear the cd drive turn off.

Ah — so the problem may not be with the new drive, but may instead be with your OS installer DVD or your optical drive. To test that hypothesis, remove the new drive and try to start up from the DVD without any hard drive in the machine. Post back with results.

If I remove the drive i get the same issue. I thought it was the same disk but I am installing from a new Imac disk. I could not find the one that came with my macbook pro. They should be the same shouldn't they? The dis says OSX 10.6.2

I'm glad you found the proper disc, because you probably wouldn't have been able to boot or install anything from the iMac disc. If you had, the resulting installation wouldn't have supported many of the hardware features of your MBP.

Just to build on eww's comment, restore disks are machine specific. Even if they have the same OS version, there are different build versions that support hardware specific to the machines they ship with.

At the risk of exposing myself as the curmudgeonly old f**t that I actually am, let me preach a little about keeping track of original installer discs. This is not directed specifically at you, Sgterik; at least you did finally find the right disc. It's directed to all the others who haven't been so lucky, or, to put it more accurately, who have made their own bad luck.

Not a single day goes by without scores, maybe hundreds, of posts in these forums from people who haven't bothered to keep track of the discs that came with their computers. This is such a ridiculously easy thing to do, and it matters so very much on the infrequent occasions when they're needed, that I can't believe how many people fail to do it.

Every time you get a new piece of software that comes on a CD or DVD — including an operating system — *put the disc in the same place with all your others.* This takes only a very small amount of space in a drawer, on a shelf, in a box, or even in a CD wallet or binder — though those are a waste of money and don't treat your discs very well. Just DO this, every single time, and none of your discs will ever be lost unless you have a fire, flood, or tornado.

Got it all done and working. Man this thing makes a difference. I went through a couple of boot ups and my time with the stock 500gb 5400rpm drive was 40n sec from the moment I hit the button to full OSX screen. Now it is 24 seconds. Indesign with a huge catalog took 1min 18 seconds. Now it is 27 seconds. Hopefully it gets better as it learns. This was based on 3 cycles.

Great news! I'm thinking about one of those drives myself, and this is encouraging.

Thanks for posting your experience Sgterik. The hybrid drive concept has been around for a number of years. Unfortunately, the first implementation relied on the OS to determine what should be cached in the flash portion of the drive (which meant the OS had to specifically support it via a driver). It really never took off. Seagate seems to have done a really good job on their controller. It's sort of surprising really considering it's pretty much the first of its type and they seem to have pretty much gotten everything right. More NAND flash would have been nice... but I guess they have to balance pricing and performance and since they're using SLC NAND, it's MUCH more expensive than MLC which is used in the majority of SSDs. It's still a nice boost in performance over a standard drive.

I tried installing the same drive in my new i7 17. No go. Tried everything. Got Snow installed via target mode, but it will not boot up. i7 works just fine with original drive. I updated the firmware on the XT and that didn't make any difference. XT won't work in my 13"MBP either. Installed the drive in my wife's Macbook unibody and it boots up just fine. If all else fails it will stay in my wife's MB. I've wasted so many hours on this. Any suggestions?

This is surely the problem I'm having installing new drive, but it is such a pain as I have several computers and trying to figure out which set of install discs to keep handy isn't simple.

Just keep them all handy. Problem solved.
