Failed to access a SMB server by using IP address

Hi Community,

I try to debug a SMB connection problem to a Windows Server 2003 SP2. 15 of 20 Mac's (10.4; 10.5; 10.6) can connect the SMB Share without any problems by using the IP address (smb://$IP_address/sharename) but the remainings cant't connect in that way. But oddly it works if I use the SMB Server Name instead the IP address (smb://$NetBIOSName/sharename). In case of a failed connection a error message becomes displayed that the connection could not be established because some files on the targetserver could not be accessed (error -36).

I tried to use the SMB Port 139 in the URL (smb://$IP_address:139/sharename) without any success. SMB Signing is off on the SMB Server.

Any hints how I can debug this problem more deeper?

Bye Tom

The Macintosh environment isn't organized in a Microsoft domain or an Apple Directory Services. The Windows 2003 server is a stand alone Workgroup server. Mentionable in that case is, that this server is a new installation with the same IP address and the same NetBIOSName as the old one had. We had no problems with the old server and the only difference between the old and new server ist, that the patchlevel now is up to date. I've no idea whats going on.

Thanks for your attention

Bye Tom
