IPhone 4 Bluetooth Issues

My overall bluetooth issues are sporadic and vary in length of time and severity. My last bout caused me to try several different earpieces from different manufacturers (including the Jawbone ERA-which did perform better, but instead of digital garble, it was a VERY sharp cracking in my ear)with no hands-down winner. It is a phone issue. I will patiently wait until the5 comes out, let others be guinea pigs about the bluetooth, and eventually buy.I'm hooked on the iPhone, and have been since the original came out. I waited until they came out with the 3gs before I upgraded from the original 8gig. Got the 4 as soon as it came out. Got a new 4 more recently to see if the bluetooth issue got fixed, but it didn't. Watched for the 4s to see if it was fixed, but it wasn't. Hoping for a correction in the 5. I've tried all of the tricks,updates, reset to previous version, different earpieces, remove/replace apps,and all to no absolute solution. I'll ultimately deal with it until they fix it. I believe they will. I also believe they'll eventually give in to Flash.Eventually. I'm trying to be optimistic. I am so sold on the fluidity and function of the iPhone, not to mention I've had plenty of friends love their Android phones until they didn't. A few have spent MAJOR time loading different software to make their phones work "better". Never an issue from my iPhone until this bluetooth issue. (There was the "forever to back up"issue-consider yourself lucky if you didn't have to deal with that one).Overall, I've been very pleased with my Apple iPhone experience. They will figure it out.

Oh, and after using the Plantronics Pro series for years,the sound quality has never been matched by the variety of other earpieces I’ve tried out. In fact, I thought the ERA sounded very "tinny" if you know what I mean. Not trying to start something, just inform. And again, just my opinion. Like I said earlier, it comes down to what you're personally willing to put up with. I find the problems I'm having from the bluetooth issue isn't enough to make me switch platforms.

I'm having similar problems - my 4S can 'discover' my BMW integrated BT system, but pairing is always unsuccessful. I get the prompt to enter a pin on my iPhone, but before I can enter the code via iDrive, I get the 'pairing unsuccessful' message, which includes the pointer to check the car's system.....how typical. I had no problems with my son's 3G, or my previous Blackberry.......

When I updated to ios5 on my ip4, my car (mercedes C-class) no longer was paired to my phone

The phone was constantly discovering/searching for a BT device to pair to

I reset the phone, synced it with i-tunes a few times, turned BT on and off, reset BT devices on my car and this did not work

Then I turned location services on, turned BT on (still discovering) BEFORE car is on, then got into my car while phone is still on and discovering, turned on ignition, had the car search for a phone and there it was.

Then, the car asked me for a 4 digit passcode which I entered, then the phone asked me for a 4 digit password, and voila we had pairing.

I think the location services had nothing to do with it. I think you have to have the phone on 1st, discovering, then turn on your car ignition (ie turning on the BT device).

Hope this helps some people.

Should it be this hard? I don't recall ever having so many of these "little" probelms with my BB

Am having iphone4 unlock version purchased in US and using the same in India. I could never get any of the device discovered in my iphone, ive switched on the personal hotspot, and bluetooth as well.

Even my ipod is not visible/discovered in my iphone4. But ipod recognizes the iphone4. Strange.

till now unsuccessful discovering any device in my iphone. Any help is really appreciated.

Am in India and please let me know how to get a replacement if this issue is not resolved. I dont want to have this much trouble after having paid to get a phone worth 800$

The 4S has unacceptable sound quality to other person to whom you are talking to when you are using a Bluetooth headset. I also have been a BlackBerry user for years. Have used the Plantronics Voyager headset for the BB with great quality to both sides of conversation. It is imperative that the listener on the other end of the call hear excellent quality when you are making business calls. Tested a loaned iPhone 4S when deciding which phone to go with for Corporate standard and used with Voyager. It was outstanding. Decided on switching to iPhone4S. When using the same Voyager on the newly purchased 4S, the sound quality to listener was extremely muffled and unusable (but sounded fine to me). Tried on different 4S, slightly better but very poor and unacceptable. Same with yet another 4S. Tried an old Nokio headset with the 4S, which sounded poor, but was almost usable. Again, this is all from the perspective of the person on the other end of the call. Absolutely amazing that Apple can't get this right. This is a very important feature of a cell phone. This will cause us to switch our corporate plans away from Apple before we get into them full-bore.

I went in to the apple store today to fix a stuck volume up button on my 4s.

Sure they swapped out the phone and the volume button is fixed.

But I ask how they’re making out on addressing the horrible Bluetooth issue on the 4

Well He responds “what Bluetooth issue ?” I respond you know the issue with the 4 and 4S

That if you’re more than 3 feet away from your earpiece it drops or has horrible sound quality.

Well he had never heard of that issue the 4S has the best new Bluetooth 4.0 maybe it’s a problem with my

old Phone.

It’s not my phone it was a problem on my previous 4 and is still a problem on the one that he just gave me.

I don’t know about you but I know common problems with the devices I support.

I’m a system administrator and I can tell you which models have common motherboard problems

or bad power supplies or capacitor issues.

Heck and Auto mechanic knows which cars have common problems.

So why is it that no one at apple knows about the Bluetooth issue on the 4’s?

I really don’t understand why I continue to use this product.

A couple of us have found that the Jawbone Era works well. I tried several other bluetooth headsets and this one finally connects well and has good call quality. But it is a shame to need such a high-end headset. I would recommend trying an Era if you can afford it. Keep us posted (literally).

The blue ant Q1 and V1 are about the same as my Era at about 1/4 of the price.

But this is still far from Ideal 3' max on any of the 3 ear pieces before hearing signal quality loss.

It's pitiful.

The Era is about the best I've used as well.

Lets make a punch an apple employee in the face day maybe they'll finally fix the **** issue.

It's really turning in to hatred of this company.

It's not the employees' fault (obviously). Nearly all the Apple employees I've worked with have been polite and helpful, to the extent they can be with a problem they did not create. And they have solved nearly all other issues I've had. An Apple manager here in Richmond went way out of his way to address my bluetooth issue. Apple does make many good devices and the iPhone 4 has some very good features, but this is frustrating and should have been corrected. Polite but clear complaints on this website may lead to some improvement on the iPhone 5. Maybe. My thought, anyway. Good night.

Yeah I know I'm just mad but it's been years dealing with this problem and maybe if we're all worthy they will fix this issue and we'll all be happy.

But it's BS that they can get away with this.

No other company can get away with the crap that apple pulls.

And C-mon apple hasn't even acknowledged any Bluetooth issue at all with the 4 or 4s.

I haven't seen a single 4+ without a Bluetooth issue but no one will acknowledge the problem.

Okay, I've thought about this reply for a long time and now believe it to be a legitimate response to this year-long debacle. I've never sued anyone in my life. But neither have I ever walked away from a commitment. Apple made a very clear and obvious commitment when they sold us these iPhone 4's: that they would perform as advertised. Apple is clearly defaulting on that commitment. If this isn't grounds for a class action, what is.

There, I've said it.

It's a software issue. I still have it on my 3G running on the latest iOS 3 update. All this **** started on 3.x something when they implemented some software echo cancelation algorythm to cope with echo issues with Apple's own bt headset. That was the beginning of the end.

I don’t know but that would be wonderful. I don’t think that’s though or it would be fixed by now.

With the 4/4s the range is so pitiful that I think it’s a poor antenna design.

Which is why Apple isn’t admitting a problem since they hyped up this revolutionary antenna design

My opinion. If the phone is in my shirt pocket I have clear quality with any earpiece because I’m only inches away from the phone.

I just wish they would acknowledge the problem.

I have yet to hear a single apple tech or exec admit that there’s a problem.

The best thing you US residents could do to address the problem, is to keep visiting the local Apple stores and let them know of the issue; last time I checked, people in an Atlanta Apple store had no idea of bt problems with any iPhone whatsoever. Please keep visiting and direct them to this and similar disccussions here on the Apple discussions.

At first, I could not have believed that it was a software problem, thinking (scientifically, I thought): "How can software affect an antenna's power?" But I took my iphone4 to the Apple store and we checked the poor range on the bluetooth (I tool all my devices to show them that it wasn't just the device). They saw the poor reception, then reset the factory settings (wiped it clean), and then we re-tested and the bluetooth worked fine! Then later it got bad again, so I am pretty sure that it is at least partially caused by some app(s). Sometimes if someone is telling me he can't hear me well, I close out open apps, and I think it is helping.

But this is a real problem, and, yes, I think Apple stores are told to say "Really, we've never heard of this problem" since I even swapped out my first iPhone4 and the problem persisted...
