IPhone 4 Bluetooth Issues

I checked with callers quite a lot as I set this up and once it was working properly they report that it sounds just fine. I'll check with someone again and I'll even try turning off the wifi to see if it makes any difference. But I've not been having any problems. I call people who have never been hesitant to tell me if I'm not coming through clearly!

Just wanted to add my name to the list. My iPhone 3G had no problems pairing with my Volkswagon GTI, but my 4S does. Sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesn't. When it's connected, sometimes phone audio works and sometimes it doesn't. I can't get it to play music over Bluetooth at all. I have tried the suggestions in this thread to no avail.

It is illegal for me to use the phone in my state without a handsfree device!

Just went through a Jawbone Icon HD, Jabra, and a Plantronics Voyager HD in 2 days before finding out about this problem with IPhone 4 (I do not have a 4s). I just returned from Genius Bar in NJ and the Genius (very professional) was aware of the Bluetooth issue and believed it is a software issue that Apple may fix with an update at a future unknown time. He attempted to connect his own IPhone 4 to a Bluetooth in my presence and was unable. We are required to use a hands free device in NJ. The earphones/mic provided with the IPhone are not safe to use because they drown out all surrounding noise (Emergency Vehicle sirens) and the chord can cause your hands to become entangled and cannot be used safely while driving in my opinion. How is Apple allowed to continue ignoring this safety issue? Dave

If hands-free is a must, I would recommend the Bose MIE2i wired earbuds. They are comfortable, easy to use, and if you place the right earbud in your ear, it is stable enough not to fall out when driving and at the same time also allows for you to hear the environment around you as well as the person with whom you are conversing. As a bonus, they are also good earbuds for music listening as well.

As far as BT headsets go, I have had decent luck with the Plantronics Voyager PRO HD. It has probably glitched out the last of all the headsets that I have used with the 4/4S (and believe me, I have tried just about every premier BT headset out there). If I encounter a problem, a reset of the phone (which I believe resets the BT stack which is the root cause of the problem) always repairs the issue.

I tried the Icon and the Voyager HD pro and even brought the voyager to Apple with me yesterday. It would not work even after a reset. I don't want to use a headphone/s with a chord while driving. I'm a police officer and I have seen many accidents due to silly reasons including things getting wrapped around a steering wheel or stick shift. Thanks for the response. Hopefully Apple corrects this issue but I have very very little confidence in that happening after seeing how long this has been going on. It seems some phones work with a BT and some don't. I will not be going with the iPhone next time that's for certain.

If you can't even pair a BT headset to the phone (but the headset pairs to other BT devices), I would guess that you have a bad phone.

I am assuming that you have tried all of the obvious things such as a software restore of the phone to stock (without restoring the backup), followed by trying to pair the BT headset. I think that sometimes a software error gets propogated to the backup image of the phone on iTunes so that if a restore is performed from the backup, the error will reappear.

In any case, you might have better luck with a new iPhone. Good luck!

Hi. I might be a bit late to the party. Not sure if this helps anyone, but I have a Blue Ant Q-2 bluetooth headset and I just fixed my problem of my I-phone 4 not successfully pairing to my Blue Ant Q-2. You need to power on your Blue Ant Q-2, then simutaneoulsy press all 3 buttons (the volume up, volume down and multi-function button on the front of your Q-2. Press all 3 of these @ the same time quickly. Then listen to the headset and you should hear "full reset completed" or something like that. Then you must power off your headset, then power it up again. At this point, as long as your I-phone bluetooth is On and able to discover bluetooth devices, it should successfully find your Q-2. Then press pair phone on your I-phone and you should be good to go.

there is really something wrong with the bluetooth and I really think it is seriously connected with the Iphone 4 antena issue. when in audio mode my bluetooth earpieces drops several times. I can have my iphone 4 in my top left shirt pocket and my earpeice in my right ear. If i turn my head right the signal will drop if I turn it back left it resumes. If I am in a area where there is no phone connectivity and I use my ipod app the bluetooth still drops. I have had my Iphone replaced once for the same problem. Too keep the phone connected to my bluetooth earpieces (i have 3 different ones with the same issues) I have to keep it in my right pocket but if I turn my head to the right again it still drops but it at least tries to stay connected. 5.0 did not make a difference to me it is worst

I have the same problem and have been using the Jawbone Era ... it worked very well with my iPhone 4, but gets a very garbled sound with the 4s. I called Jawbone and they said it was a connectivity issue because of a problem with the phone not having ample power to the antenna ... or some such thing. I spent 30 minutes doing all the reboots of the earpiece and the phone. It helped somewhat, but it's still not clear. I called Apple today and they said that some earpieces that were made before the 4s was released will have connectivity problems and there really isn't anything they can do about it!! They did suggest a few other earphones that might work better, but the next one will cost me $20 more than this one and this one cost me $129!! Besides, from what I have read, it seems there aren't any earpieces that don't have this problem. I sure hope Apple is going to do something to rectify this problem ... SOON!!

What you say to them, is that you are selling your phone to be used by the general public, who use many different bluetooth accessories ... if your phone is only going to work well with Apple products, then you have a responsibility to tell the public that info, so they know whether or not to buy your product! I have a Jawbone Era that worked very well with my 4, but sounds like garbage on my 4s. Jawbone says it's a problem with the antenna in the 4s and Apple says there is nothing they can do about it, and that the problem is with my earpiece since it was made before the 4s came out .... what kind of an answer is that?? If necessary, I will trade my 4s back for a 4 ... any suggestions out there?

Iphone 4s in UK on Vodafone

I have been experiencing the same as most other people. The issue I have is that I am using a Sony Erickson headset which paired with no issues and usually works fine for 1 call but not always. i have noticed that the phone decides to drop the bluetooth connection to the headset almost like it has forgotten it is there. I experience this issue everyday. The phone is a month old and has all the latest software etc installed. When I experience this issue I turn off the headset and switch back on and it usually works again first time but not always. When trying to make a call and the phone drops / forgets its connnected to the BT headset you have the option to select either speaker / handset / your BT headset. Selecting the BT headset button the phone usually will not reconnect to the BT headset it just wont acknowledge the command. This issue is very irritating considering the cost of the phone. Never had this issue with my blackberry, that worked flawlesly on blue tooth. Bout time this was fixed the original issue was raised a year ago! Love apple products but come on bluetooth is a basic option on a phone these days.

My wife has the same phone different BT headset manufacturer and experiences the same issue.

Oddly, I continue to have "acceptable" performance with my recently new BlueAnt V1 through my iPhone 4. "Acceptable" defined as: good 30' range, very very few dropped connections, and moderately good voice clarity (using the "Max" noise cancelling setting on the V1 at all times, even in quiet environments).

One thought occurs to me as to why this combo may be working. My ip4 is protected in a Seidio Convert case. If you are familiar with this case it is actually a three-layer design: an inner two-piece hard case, covered with a silicon shell, covered in a skeletonized hard shell. My point is that this multi-layer case is adding a significant boundary layer around the ip4 sexy but problematic perimeter antenna design.

So whether the ip4 is being carried on my belt in the Convert's holster, or laying on my desk, the connection is consistently strong with very rare disconnects.

Why should you have to resort to all these freaking extra measures just to get 'acceptable' performance from an APPLE PRODUCT??!!" It's pathetic that this thread even exists, isn't it? This is for everyone with BT issues ... which seems to be everyone! I use an Otterbox Defender case for my 4s and don't think that has anything to do with the problem, as I also used it for my 4 and didn't have any problems. What I did find, is that by turning off the Wi-Fi on the phone, my Jawbone ERA works fine. No, we shouldn't have to do that, but it is a temporary solution to a problem that doesn't seem to exist in Apple's mind. I hope this helps some of you .... let me know. In the meantime, let's hope Apple corrects this issue ....SOON!!!!!!!

You are correct, this update does NOTHING to fix Bluetooth issue. Using Blueant Q1 and it will not "auto connect" or auto discover with the IPhone 4s. No problem getting BT to pair, just will not connect automatically after they are moved apart and back together. Pretty bad that this worked just fine prior to the big Iphone4s purchase. Oh and Apple not only will not help, they wont admit there is a problem. Not looking good for Apple and the IPhone. 😉

I am probably the only iphone user on the planet who has never put my phone into any case -- it's just naked. I set in on my desk, pair it with my Plantronics 150 headset (which works great with my Android phone), sit with my head about two feet away from the phone, and I still can't make myself heard by the people I call. I have updated to the new IOS release, but just this morning I made a call where I could hear fine but the person I was speaking to could not hear me well. I swtiched the phone to "speaker" mode and the problem immediately disappeared.

This is not a connectivity problem, not a headset issue, not a user issue, not a cellular signal problem. What's left? Only the iPhone 4s. This is HUGELY annoying for me.
