Ok, now I am really ******. You can see my previous post about the terrible blue tooth problems I have had. To add insult to injury, today I got a bill from Apple for $29.00 for calling them about the problem. Even better, they automatically charged my credit card so they just took the payment!

Update on BT with BMW. Apple exchange my Iphone 4 with another unit (same OS 4.01) but a slightly later production model. This seems to have cleared up the issues with staying connected and muffled audio on other end. I suspect the radio in the original phone was slightly off frequency which may account for the random nature of the connectivity. So far so good. I will report back in about a week.

What week was your model made?
Mine is week 30 and I sound muffled on incoming calls, and when I transfer from phone to bluetooth.

Mine new one is week 31 (assuming the 4th and 5th digits are the week)

The original s/n looks like it was week 25. But, I am not sure if some component started aging prematurely on the previous phone and affecting the BT radio.

I previously had the iphone 3GS and used several different bluetooth headsets with it (BlueAnt Q1 & V1, BlueTrek Metal – not cheap headsets); never a problem with any of them – and I’m on the phone All The Time. I got the iphone 4 and the BlueTrek was cycling through the un-pair/re-pair process every couple of minutes. Thought maybe it was the headset – NO same thine happens with the BlueAnt Q1 & V1 if I put the phone in my shirt pocket or pants pocket. How close does the phone need to be?! I could leave my 3GS in the car, pump gas, walk away & pay for it and stay on my call – no more. I am a loyal Apple user (MacBook Pro 17) but Apple needs to FIX THIS!

I too have had audio problems using several bluetooth headsets and while using the att micro cell. I have found if you turn off the ipod function running in the backround or any other audio app running in the backround clears this up. Try it yourselves and see that it works. I think thier is some crossover issues that needs to be fixed by apple. The next time your party on the other line has trouble hearing you ask them to hold and double tap your home button and close everything running. I guarantee it works.

The question seems rather obvious to me, how do you fix the problem with the iPhone 4 and the bluetooth headset?

The Genius at the Apple Store said the only solution was to wait for an update that might come out soon - which is not an acceptable solution for business users.

Anyone noticing a difference with iOS 4.0.2 update? Apple makes NO mention of a Bluetooth fix but some on Jawbone's user forums are claiming they're seeing better performance.

Many on the Jawbone forum in the past reported temporary improvement after doing a "Reset ALL Settings" on iPhone (which is a pain as it resets MANY things outside of Bluetooth), a hard reset on the Jawbone and then a re-pair of the phone and headset. But these same people report it usually only lasts a week or so (I noticed the same thing). Soon the static, "Charlie Brown Teacher" muffled outgoing voice quality and disconnect/reconnect problems reappear...I suppose as a result of the BT software stack getting corrupted with use.

Am now going to attempt the iOS 4.0.2 upgrade - the improvement reported could be from some portion of the Bluetooth settings/software stack that are being "cleaned" as part of the upgrade.

Again, really wishing I hadn't sold my 3GS and was still on iOS 3.1.3...A killer when you run your business from your iPhone.

My bluetooth headset (backbeat 903) also has problem with iPhone 4 (which worked perfect with 3Gs and 3G). The people talk to me on the phone find it difficult to hear me clearly from my iPhone 4 if I talk on my bluetooth headset. And the audio quality of iPhone 4 through bluetooth headset is very unstable.

Besides, the internet tethering works only with USB connect to iPhone 4 but not through bluetooth. I never had such problem with 3Gs or 3G.

The fix for this is in iOS 4.1 beta 3. If you're a paid dev, you can test it out now or wait until 4.1 is officially released.

I have been using IPhone 4 for sometime and I had same Bluetooth issues with Nokia BH-904. I updated to IOS 4.0.2 3 days ago and I'm seeing improvement in the connection. I had many issues with the connection of the bluetooth in the previous versions of the IOS 4 and got the Bluetooth replaced as was as it was still under warranty. Will monitor more. The disconnects have really improved, sometimes if I put the IPhone in my pocket it disconnects but now the quality is much better. I never experienced muffled voice but yeah I have to say that it used to disconnect a lot.

I haven't experienced any problems with bluetooth range, but I've had several people comment that we have a "bad connection" when I talk on my bluetooth headset. This was not a problem with my 3GS on 4.0.2. Also, if I put my hand in my pocket with my iPhone, even if I don't grip the phone (which has a bumper on it), the call becomes garbled on my end. I'm not convinced these issues are software related, since the same OS on my 3GS didn't have these issues. I'm discourage by Apple's lack of response to any posts on the discussion boards. I love the way it looks, but I wish I had my 3GS back, it was a better product.

You're right, I wish Apple would respond to these challenges. Bluetooth headsets are very useful and if they don't work well with the phone then it's a waste! Try driving your car and constantly knocking the cable out of your phone while turning the steering wheel.
