Q: Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

same problem - people can't hear me. Really frustraing. The mic was intermittent for the last few weeks, sometimes cutting out during a call, and sometimes not working all day. Lots of hard resets, shutdowns, etc, but nothing really worked. Also did the restore through itunes which didn't help. Voice Memo worked fine. Earbud mic did not work on calls either. So I tend to believe the theories about the noise cancelling mic having a problem, but the main mic is fine. I got a replacement unit at my genius appt and so far, new phone is good.

I'm having having same problem. Mic just stops working. I can tap on table and it will work for about 2 sec. This is the thing though mic works while using voice control and in Yahoo Messenger on Video Chat perfectly.

I've reset Network Setting, Popped out SIM, Restored Phone, Closed all Apps except phone, deleted several mic using apps, and nothing is fixing it!!!!!! This is a known Glitch!!! Come on Apple admit there's a problem and do what it takes to fix it.

I think it's BS that when this is a known issue Apple tells me the basic steps to go through when obviously by all these posts it's not fixing the problem and all they're concerned about is selling you an Apple Care Protection Plan.

I really wish I had went the Droid Route.

I can guarantee that if Apple Care Protection Plan isn't included with iPhone purchase by the time my contracts up these will be the last two iPhones I ever buy!

same problem for me - during phone calls the other side does not hear me, but i can hear myself! mic also works on other apps. tapping on the table fixes issue for some seconds.

last week i sent it for repair to apple care center. today they returned it with the simple message: "cannot duplicate issue". Seeing the large number of same cases in this forum, it is a TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE customer treatment.

APPLE, UNLESS YOU QUICKLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS - THIS WILL BE MY VERY LAST PRODUCT I WILL HAVE EVER-EVER BOUGHT FROM YOU!!!! IN THIS CASE >>YOU<< CAN AT LEAST TRUST >>ME<< !!!

I have the same problem. During the calls (sometimes immediately sometimes after 1-2 minutes) people can’t hear me ever. Nothing worked till today except little finger-taps to the upper side of the phone. So I think this is obviously the hardware or assembly problem.
Tomorrow for the fourth time I'll leave the phone for repair. As they have returned me with a reply of non detection of the problem for the first three times; I'm helpless and desperate.
All my positive opinions for the "client centered Apple service" have shattered.
I'll think twice for the next apple product

Add me to the list of those now having problems with the Iphone 4 mic problems. I can make a call, I can hear the other person on the other end of the phone, but he cannot hear me. The Iphone has a lot of neat gadgets, but is just a poor phone. Annoying beyond all measures. I do not think it is a hardware issue. It's too coincidental that so many people are having the same problem. Unless Apple fixes this problem, I will never, ever purchase an Apple product again.

Same problem that everyone else is having. The major difference for me is that tapping on a flat surface does nothing. All other audio apps work fine just not a phone conversation. I have an appointment in Southlake tonight at 5:30.........

We did a restore of my wife's phone to factory settings a few days ago, knowing that this is what Apple would probably insist on doing to eliminate the possibility of a software error (like a buggy app or something). My plan was to let her use the phone normally (though inconveniently, since it doesn't have any of her apps on it now), wait until the error happened again, and then take it into the Mac store to have them observe it. So far, it hasn't happened yet, to my surprise. She hasn't used the phone as regularly as she had been, so it isn't an apples to apples test just yet. But if after a few more days the problem doesn't resurface, then I am going to conclude that it is not a hardware problem but a software problem, at which point we'll probably start adding back apps and such carefully, watching closely to see if the error happens again, similar to how we introduced new foods carefully to our kids watching closely for any food allergies.

same problem. People can't hear me. I noticed it works if I plug in the adapter for charging or syncing to my computer. Also, if I tap it on my leg it crackles then works. Maybe a loose mic?
Phone is basically useless when not near an adapter.

I'm having the same problem. Apple replaced my old iPhone 4 (the screen shattered after I dropped it) for free (THANKS!!!) four days ago. I started having this problem on my old phone about a month and a half ago and this new phone is having the same problems right off the bat. Like everyone says above, I can hear the other person perfectly but they can't hear me. Sometimes it works when I am on speaker and sometimes not. I have tried the tap it on the table trick and it didn't work. I believe that this is a software problem. My girlfriend is on a 3gs with iOS 4.0 and does not have this problem. I did not have this problem when I originally bought the first iPhone 4... thus, a software problem. Apple needs to fix this quick! I don't feel like busting out my old Motorola ROCKR!

i had the samr problem until a few days ago. sent the phone in to apple and received it back with no repair.
this is how i solved it:

removed sim card, cleaned up / carefully scratched the contacts of the sim, reinserted sim into phone. done. no soldering, no disassembly necessary.

afterwards i had no problems anymore - seems like iphone4 has a very week contact to the microsim. at least in my case mic worked fine, just no voice data went out.

maybe this helps a few others out there, too. it might also be worth testing the phone with another sim card.

Same problem here. I guess there is enough number of complaints for Apple to address the issue.

btw - I addressed every possible issue that could be related to the carrier, to no avail. Just to contribute to the list of what *did not* work.
