Mar 2, 2011 9:06 PM in response to leebhertyby mcaa,how where you able to solve this problem? I am having the same problem. -
Mar 3, 2011 4:39 AM in response to mcaaby gonzajg,Same issue! Very frustating! Can't believe they won't even recognize it for a software update!
I can use everything buy the PHONE APP. Callers can't hear me.
It's odd that with some moving sometimes they can hear me for some seconds but no more than that.
In EVERY other app, mic works perfectly (even to tune my guitar).
Tried everything you can find in the web and nothing fixes the issue.
Even updated to 4.3 Beta 3 hoping they had fixed it but same result.
I have 3 friends with same iphone and 2 have this problem!
APPLE DO SOMETHING! WE DON'T WANT REPLACEMENTS BUT A SOFTWARE FIX!
And the problem is not from AT&T. Me and my friends have different carriers

Mar 3, 2011 7:50 AM in response to wrecktifyby drekkerd,Just posting to say 'me too'. In fact I'm now on my 3rd iPhone 4 in 5 days. The first one kept rebooting itself and going into recovery mode so I never actually got to use it. The 2nd one developed the issue of this thread after less than 2 days. I could not be heard on any inbound or outbound call whether through the mic, speakerphone or bluetooth headset. The problem started out as infrequent and was a mild annoyance but became more and more prevalent and finally just stopped working as a phone altogether. I'm convinced this is a hardware problem and the only permanent solution is to get your phone replaced ASAP. I hope Apple gets their QC issues under control here as this is a bit ridiculous and only exacerbates the perception that the iPhone is a great palmtop computer but a crappy phone. -
Mar 3, 2011 8:08 AM in response to wrecktifyby PowerG,After long time with this problem my phone has been replaced. New one is working perfectly.
Do not loose more time and go to your Genius bar.
Good luck! -
Mar 3, 2011 12:33 PM in response to PowerGby gonzajg,Many said the same and the problem came back in less than a month. Be careful! -
Mar 4, 2011 1:44 AM in response to gonzajgby PowerG,The first one started doing this since I made the first call. For the moment, during two weeks the new one works fine.
I will keep posting to inform.
Cheers mate! -
Mar 4, 2011 2:39 PM in response to PowerGby gonzajg,I guess the problem could be with the voice encoder for calls. Because mic works perfectly.
I'm stuck with the phone in Argentina (bought it in England) and here there's no official Apple support. The warranty is until august though...
Anyone knows what can I do?
PS: iOS 4.3 GM doesn't work either. -
Mar 6, 2011 5:46 PM in response to wrecktifyby zebrasrule,Add me to the list too. For the last week, with increasing frequency, callers cannot hear me when I answer a call or the call drops after a minute or two. My phone also works on speaker- but I can see from earlier posts that even this may stop. Sigh. I really liked my phone until this. I don't keep a landline and so this is very frustrating! -
Mar 8, 2011 6:52 PM in response to wrecktifyby nickTomaras,Had the iPhone 4 since Launch day, and now is starting to happen...
So I text my wife and daughter when this happens.
Sometimes they can hear me and other times it's...."Can you hear me now"
I restored many times, tried to reset all settings
But no luck
The mic works with other apps but not the phone...

Mar 9, 2011 4:58 AM in response to wrecktifyby Paul Talbot-Evans,Just to add to the known.... Dito to what everyone has said:
Not on 'mute', transferred to speaker phone and back, rebooted, reset all settings, restored, restored as fresh iPhone, exchanged for new iPhone4, put in new sim card, swapped sim card with other user of same network, tested mic on phone calls = same issue, tested microphone on voice memos = same issue, and now out of options.....
To note the fault is intermittent as mentioned before; sometimes people hear me on speaker mode, other times not; sometimes they hear me on normal mic mode, other times not.
Additionally: There are reports by people listening that they hear a lot of static as if standing under a shower head turned on, then the nothing....
Since restoring to older OS version has not reported success by others, I am not going to entertain myself with that.
Back to Apple Store for another iPhone4 and hope I get lucky.... tough call when you work full time...
For now, I have bought a cheap phone, and diverted all my calls to this phone. This allows me to interact with the callers and use the iPhone for texting, apps, internet, mail etc.
sigh
Of interest what are the specs for your iPhones? perhaps a particular model issue?
Mine:
O.S = 4.2.1
Size = 32GB (registers at 29.1GB)
Colour = Black
Model = MC319LL
Carrier = '3 Mobile' Australia
Location = Perth metro area (near the ocean)
To date, it is sounding like a hardware fault. The closest thing sounds like connection issues 'oxidising' on the main board or something? Possible humidity? Sea salt in the air perhaps? (no idea, grabbing at 'straws' here....
Here is a toast for a possible solution in the near future. *cheers -
Mar 10, 2011 4:20 AM in response to Paul Talbot-Evansby Paul Talbot-Evans,Went to the Apple store and they gave me a new iPhone.... all works well. So I am going to assume its a hardware issue..... -
Mar 11, 2011 9:39 PM in response to wrecktifyby pogopaterson,Just to say I have also started experiencing these problems. Trouble is am living in Qatar. Brought the iP4 in England last August so had it for 7 months. Don't have access to Genius Bar. iOS4.3 didn't fix problem. -
Mar 13, 2011 9:52 AM in response to pogopatersonby gonzajg,Same as me. I live in Argentina.
Got to get someone that is travelling to Europe to change it...
Can't believe this device has such a stupid issue. Can't speak when calling? And this is a 2010 cellphone?
I am now using my iPhone 1 (4 years old) and never had any problem. Guess that tech is going backwards regarding liability
