Q: Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

I posted here about 6 months ago with the same problem.  Based on another post, I found that whacking my phone on its back (usually twice) restores audio every time.  Because of this barely passable workaround, I decided to wait for the iPhone 5 then upgrade, but, as we just learned, there is no iPhone 5 yet. Hopefully, Apple will have it first quarter of next year.

So a couple of days ago I went to AT&T and bought a 3GS for about $33 US dollars ("Free" + sales tax in California). Because AT&T wouldn't let me downgrade, I had to apply the upgrade to another family member's account that only uses a basic cell phone.

Of course, as I mentioned before, neither Apple nor AT&T would fix my iPhone 4. Apple said they'd examine it if I sent it in for 2 weeks, but this was unacceptable since its my only phone and my business line and my business notes.

Surprisingly to me, iTunes let me "restore" my iPhone4 backup into my 3GS, simply excluding one app incompatible with the 3GS.

Then I started working on my iPhone 4. Since I suspect(ed) a loose connector, I took apart my iPhone 4, but only to the level of disconnecting and reconnecting the little chip-plug connectors.  YouTube has at least one good iPhone 4 disassembly video. I also loosened and re-tightened the "large head" screw by the camera as described in the following post from another forum:

    http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/38137/Microphone+not+working+when+making-rece iving+calls#answer38152

    "Again the same issue!!

"Have you opened the phone?? Or dropped it?

"Well one screw near the camera (big head one fixing the bard to the metal body of the phone seems in some cases to be guilty of this).

"What is happening for sure in your case, the second mike near the headphones jack is not working. It seems to be grounded with the body and it's contact is on this particular screw!

"As I already told: The screw near the camera (big head one fixing the board to the metal body of the phone) seems in some cases to be guilty of this. In total there are only 3 screws grounding the board to the 3 bands iPhone has. The one I'm talking is the one near the camera (back one) not the one down below the data connector nor the long small headed one near the headphone jack."

    "Armald Imeraj, Jul 7 @ 12:16 AM

So I may switch back to my iPhone 4 and test it again, knowing I can easily switch to my 3GS backup phone if necessary, then upgrade to the iPhone 5 in 2012.  Whewww.

Team.  I hd the same problem and I belive that willable1 had the fix for this problem.  I closed all my apps and made several calls and it seems that the problem was solved.  In my case i beleive the app that is causing the problem is iheartradio.  My problem started after an update.  Hope this is a fix and helps you.  Kudos to willable1.

this is very depressing reading - at the end of September My 6month old iPhone 4 started crackling when I was talking to people, making it impossible for them to hear me. took it to the apple store and after attempting to restore it without success they replaced it. That was on the Sunday, by the following Thursday the new phone was playing up, people couldn't hear me after a minute or so - I could hear them perfectly, if I turned it off it worked for a minute or so and they couldn't hear me again. took the phone back ant they replaced it again. now on 3rd phone ... But they said if it happened again to contact carrier O2. It happened almost immediately, contacted O2 they sent out a new micro sim - it's installed - yesterday - still got the problem - driving me nuts.

will try head phones, pinching etc and will go back to the apple store again and show them all the posts.

found the answer on youtube, ten year old kid!!! its the noise cancelling microphone issue. The small hole next to the headphone socket. I used a very thin safey pin and gentle pushed a couple of mm into hole. I also used a couple of strands from a tooth brush. I am not sure if it just cleared some dust but it worked straight after. I also gave a couple of blows for good measure!!. Youn can tell if its the mic issue by pushing down on the hole area when making a call and the sound should come back on, if it does try the safety pin.

    Whats up guys,

My iPhone 4 has this exact same problem, no one can hear me during calls. I smacked the phone around just a bit and after a couple hits it works, but only for a minute or two, then it goes back to the mic not working.

I tried cleaning it and everything like you all did, still no luck.

My apple warranty has expired, I wanted to ask all of you that If I take it to apple, and the tech screens the phone, and he/she finally comes to the point of replacing it, will I have to pay for it?

I find this widespread problem ridiculous to say the least..

I bought my iPhone 4 almost a year ago. After one month people told me they couldn't hear me during the first 30 seconds. They said it was like I was in a kind of basement. I didn't dropped it, it didn't get wet, ... no explanation at all.

Yesterday, I installed iOS5 and did some test calls. Till now, all my calls were great! Everybody heared me well!

Hopefully installing iOS5 is the solution to this problem for the rest if you too. Let's hope it will keep working now.

Installing iOS5 did not fix the issue with my phone. However I think my issue is different than wannesc because no one can hear me at all.

The genius I've talked to said it was an issue with the sim card functions (either the sim itself or the sim reader - which kind of made sense since the issue with the mic is only when making call) and I should swap the sim to see if it fixed the issue.

    It didn't.

I wasn't the only one with the issue at the bar too

I purchased a 4S on Monday and the first call I made wasn't able to hear me until I was on speakerphone.  Then things seemed okay until this afternoon; it's very hard for callers to hear me (although I can hear them well) unless I'm on speakerphone.  Went back to AT&T just now and they would have exchanged the phone but are out of stock.  They called a few other area stores, but no luck.  The rep suggested going to the Apple store for an exchange since they have a good supply of phones.  I just made an appt. for Saturday morning, since that's the first chance I will have to get there.  Hopefully I will get a new phone with no problems.

Did you clean the small hole at the top?, introduce a thin wire and try to take some dirt from inside. It helped a little, but at the end I ended up with a galaxy S II. Quite happy right now with the new phone
