Q: Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

I had a similar problem and havent seen the solution that worked for me posted anywhere so thought I would post here. My issue was people said they could barely hear me on calls. The phone has worked perfectly for about a year and a half but last week the problem started. I tried soft and hard resets but those didn't work so I took it to my local apple store. They fixed it by going to settings > sounds > ringers and alerts. The slider was nearly all the way to the left edge and the woman from the genius bar simply moved the slider to the middle. Problem solved. Obviously the ringers and alerts setting should not impact the microphone volume but apparently there's a software glitch that does. Simple solution that's worked perfectly for me. Hope this works for others.

I have had my iPhone 4 for almost 2 years now and this problem occured to me a couple of months ago. At first it wasnt too bad but this is now happening quite alot and it's REALLY grinding my gears. Will Apple be able to help me out for free or will they end up trying to get more money from me?Kinda puts me off upgrading to iPhone 5 when that comes out.

Sorry Daniel, but you are likely hosed.  As mentioned above, this exact problem happended to me twice.  Once with the original, and once with the replacement they charged me £120 for.  They wanted to charge me another £120 to replace the replacement and claim that they have never heard of this issue before.  Geniuses indeed.

Anyway, the cardboard trick that was mentioned in one of the earlier comments (and video) does resolve the issue.  I fixed the original replacement phone this way but now use a Samsung Galaxy S2 as my default phone. Best of luck.

Since apple keep dening that this is a known issue why don't we all go to certain apple stores at the same time to prove that we are not just an annomoly. Sounds very far-fetched, however might be possible with the amount of people who have this issue and may get apple to admit mistake!

Wow, this has been going on for 2 years and they won't admit the problem? Just started happening to me and it is causing issues with my work now.  If Apple refuses to fix anything, maybe ATT will cut me a deal on a better phone.  They should replace all of these screwed up phones for free.

I just wanted to add that I too am experiencing this issue. How frustrating. It looks like there are no real solutions.

I took mine to the Apple store and they replaced it with a refurb for 150 plus tax.  I didn't have insurance and was still under contract with ATT.  I wasn't in the store more than half an hour and had all my contacts due to the Icloud thing before I left the store and the new phone works great.  Upgrading to the 5 in January.

My issue turned out to be that my iphone sound got messed up after having headphones plugged in. This has happened with my ipod touch, iphone, and both ipads now. It usually is fixable by plugging and unplugging headphones again, but didn't work right away this time. I was about to go to get the phone replaced when I tried the headphone thing one more time and the problem went away for now...

UGH! This cardboard fix did NOTHING for me. I don't know, maybe I didn't do it right. Tried it twice with different thickness cardboard. It is extremely frustrating. This phone is only 2 years old. So angry there is no other fix than that cardboard one. If I'm gonna pay Apple $150, I might as well buy the iphone 5.

My phone is out of warranty or I would have been at the Apple Store pronto. At this rate, I know I can expect the standard $150+ fix speech.  All I feel I can do is keep trying this cardboard fix. I have yet to find anything else to do. Do NOT want to sink close to $200 into this. Makes more sense to just buy the 5.  I can't believe how Apple rips you off. And we are loyal fans.

Thanks. Yes, it worked. Had exactly the same problem. My wife dropped her iPhone 4 and started to have this random mic problems when making phone calls. This has fixed it.

So, I'm sure you've already figured this out by now. Hopefully :) But for anyone else experiencing this issue, if you're still under warranty, take the phone to an apple store & they'll give you a new one right away. I just got home from getting mine. If you're looking for a temporary fix in the meantime, I was told that if you use the headset/headphones that came with your phone, people should be able to hear you. Hope this helps someone out there :)

Hello, I'm from Finland and suddenly experiencing the same problem with iPhone 4 since last week, after 1 year of happy usage without any problems.

By the way, if you switch the loudspeaker on while speaking, the other people may be able to hear you. Or, if you shout loudly, they also can hear you. It seems that the microphone voice is not correctly (i.e., it is much too weakly) amplified in case of the phone application.

I bought my iPhone as part of the Telia Sonera subcription. So, I'll bring my phone back to their store this week to see, if I can still get it replaced.

But, how long is the warranty period? Is it more or less than 1 year?

    Cheers,

    Tiitu.

    @ Tiituli:

I don't know if it is different in Finland but normaly Apple has a 1 year guarantee. But you can try it at least...
