Q: Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

Infact is a hardware problem, is the connectos inside the iPhone that have the problem. A friend of mine had that problem in his new iphone and we just opened it and what we did was to unplug all connectors and plug them again and everything worked fine again. The problem started when he droped the iphone accidentaly.

Of cuorse this voids the warranty.
Also this steps came from a trusted source ( employer of apple) that he knows.

I went to the Apple store 3 days in a row because of the problem. Getting new phones (I'm on my 3rd) didn't fix it. Finally they admitted it's an intermittent SW problem that has been recognized by Apple. The manager said the next OS update will likely have the fix.

I'm also having this issue. Some people cannot hear me when I'm talking through the phone to them and others can.

Just looking to know if it's a software or a hardware problem. I've done all the usual fixes (restoring, turning 3G/WiFi off, etc...) people can hear me fine when i'm on the speaker phone or headphones but not through the regular mic/phone to ear setup.

It's really frustrating as I don't want to be on speaker in a public place.

I'm hoping a software update will fix this soon otherwise I might have to find a replacement phone.

I am having the same issue the only way is to tap the phone on a table but i have to do that every minute or so. it must be a hardware issue may be the connectors inside the phone, however am not prepared to open up the phone just yet so am taking it back to apple for a replacement.

here the same on my new (less than a month) iphone 4
i'm reading a lot about this issue these days and i found out something.
like it's written above me one of the solutions is tapping a little the phone.
another way it's shaking it. i tried calling my phone from my house on speaker and i saw that, if i can't hear my voice from the iphone, i shake it and so i can hear the noise from the caller telephone (so now the microphone its working)...
yeah.. but you know... it's a 650 eur phone.. it's not nice shaking it to make it work..
    that's not all..
obviously i tried a full restore but the problem remains. the funny thing is that Skype works.. if i call the echo123 (the test-call) i can record the message just fine.
same thing for the sound recorder.. this issue it's only on calls... jeez... it's a telephone and it does not call???
i'm thinking of shipping everything to apple care.. but from italy i have to ship to holland! so i will have to wait at least 15 days to have something back and i'm afraid that if the work takes a long time i will receive an iOS 4.2 device.
i opened my old n70 a thousand times and im quite used to manage electronics devices but risking to avoid the warranty just due to this issue it's not worth.
    has someone the magic fix?

Had this problem on iPhone 4 for 2 days: callers or people I call cannot hear me. I can hear them clearly. Multiple restarts & hard resets: no joy. Tried turning off 3G: no joy. I thought it was a network problem until I did a search.

As described above, except Skype couldn’t “hear” me either when trying Echo123. Tapping gently on the table worked for 2-3 seconds only.

With Telstra Australia. At least some of my friends (callers and callees) are with Telstra as well, but don’t know about all of them. Tried iPhone-provided earphones, same symptoms. Device otherwise working well: speakers OK, games OK. Unrelated to the mute button, since I tried the headset, and also tried “talking into the phone like it was a slice of pizza” -- i.e. face not close to the screen.

*Resolved with a restore, and restore from backup, thank goodness.* iTunes 10.0.1, Mac OS X 10.6.4. iOS 4.1

NB: recently installed a Telstra network update through iTunes. Also applied a Speck Fitted Case recently. I think those are red herrings. Also have a iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.1 on same network which is working OK.

i dont know if yours it's a complete fix..
i restored a lot of times but on my case it dont seems work
i cant understand one thing, if this is an hardware connection issue, why it's working wih skype?
if it's a software issue why it's not working with a restore or a reset?..
maybe i'm doing something wrong... when you say you restored from a backup what do you mean? what did you do?

I had the same problem with my iPhone 4. I had troubles with calls but nothing bad until I updated to 4.1 from 4.0.2 next thing I know is no one can hear me. Sometimes I would get lucky and someone would hear me for a little bit and then it would go out again. I restored my phone a few times, every way possible and nothing fixed it. I could record my voice fine, I could hear others fine, I could do everything but call people or be called and have them hear me. I took it to the store and they gave me a new one on the spot. I have had no problems since.

I recommend that everyone who has this issue just get the new phone. I think its a hardware issue with the antenna... its the only thing I could think of.

No offense, but doesn't anyone read posts? Apple says it's a SW issue. I've been through 3 phone, all with the same problem. Don't bother getting another phone.

    count me in on this

After a month of no problems. It started mid call yesterday. now I can only make calls with the speaker on or using the headphones

    Very annoying.

Reading through these posts I'm guessing a trip the the Apple store won't result in a fix, only a phone swap, maybe.

Was wondering if iOS 4.2 beta would fix it but reading you have to be in the developer program to get it working?

Anyone know when the GM is due?

Hi, I had this problem as well until yesterday. I had to shout down the handset at times to be heard. I finally had enough yesterday so returned the phone to 02. I was told I'd have to take my phone to the nearest apple store which is 1 hour away. Soon told them that wasn't going to happen and after much arguing on the phone to 02 and in my local store they agreed to swap the handset for a new one. I purchased the phone in August so was out of the 28 day replacement scheme. I don't think a software fix will help this personally so I'd suggest a replacement handset is the only way you'll fix this.

Don't let any shop tell you that they cannot do anything. You have to really persist to get them to do anything.

    Cheers

    i dont think it's a SW issue...
on the phone, the apple care guy saw to me to plug and anplug the headset 15 times
    clearly this don't work..
so they made me make a restore... but i did restores by my self a thousand times and infact it didn't work
so they refund me and i took a new one...yeah.. now all systems go hahaha

Joy lasted for a day. And then now I can only be heard through a wired or bluetooth headset. Built in mic is either inaudible to very very soft on the other end. Skype can't record through internal mic either.

    Ugh. Peculiar.

Restore from backup means press the restore button in iTunes. And then after iTunes erases iPhone, clicking the "restore from backup" option.
