I have been experiencing this same issue the past month. I have tried many of the tips and tricks on this thread and I think I have found a solution that makes sense.

  • I removed safari from the bottom dock.
  • I removed all iPhone apps from iPad

With these two easy steps the home buttom went from not working at all to working everytime.

Have you tried resetting the ipad to ensure it's not a software issue?
1) Press and Hold the Home and Wake Sleep buttons until the Apple Logo appears.
2) If that doesn't work, try a reset, To reset go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset.
3) Restore ipad from itunes.

If none of these steps fix the issue, look up the apple support phone number for Hong Kong and call to see what they can do for you. If they can't help, they should be able to direct you to the proper place for repair.

I am experiencing a response-less home button. It does not appear to be a software issue as I have restarted several times. I have the keyboard dock and the home button on the keyboard works fine, hence it looks like a hardware issue on the ipad. Loathe having to contact apple support but looks like I'll have to, unless anyone else has had luck fixing it some other way.

I am having the same home button issues. I purchased my iPad2 online here in the states. it has been working beautifully until today. This is a real problem for me since I have my school books on the iPad. I've done what most of you have done, everything form a restore to synching several times. Once its on one app, it can function on the one app, but will not let me go to another app without the restore button being pushed in and then back to the home screen. I pick an app, it opens it, then the Home button will not let me move to other apps. I have a call into Apple to call me, If I find anything out, I'll post what I find out.

I can't imagine what I'm going to do if they have to take my iPad2 away to fix it, I don't have a hard copy of my Graduate text books, and I would have to pay twice for them. The books are on the Kindle App since iBooks didn't have these books.

I may have had a breakthru... I started thinking what would everyone be using on their iPhone and iPad? Safari!!! So I undocked Safari from the bottom of the screen and rebooted my iPad. It instantly started working flawlessly! I ran it pushing the button often and it never missed! Single clicks, double clicks it’s been working perfectly. I tried the same thing for my iPhone which was having the same issue and it also has worked perfect ever sense undocking safari, rebooting, and then it was safe to put safari back to the original location! So far all of the clicks to the home button have worked!

Experiencing the same issue. Tried the Accessibility setting and mine was already to "off". Also tried Safari undock fix and that worked... But only for a few days and now I have to undock Safari regularly which tells me something is also compounding this. I have noticed that when I move from one wireless zone to another the problem returns. Eg. Undock safari and all is good in the one place. Move to the office wireless situation and problem returns. Crazy!

Mine started playing up again.

Did complete reset which solved nothing.

Only thing I found which worked is to push in the bezel on either side of the home button, so maybe it's a hardware thing? This iPad has zero screen bleeding which is unbelievable so maybe the home button is just niot being pressed in enough?

This is the thing ... only had this since yesterday and I have returned LOTS OF UNITS due to faulty pixels. This unit, other than the home button issue, is perfect so I am very reluctant to just return for a swap as I can guarantee you that any replacement would have a dodgy pixel or two.

Tell me, did your issue only arise after a software iOS upgrade? Maybe iOS 5 would sort it?

One of the other iPads which I returned had this home button issue but it seemed to resolve after a reset and as I have already said they all went back because I found faulty pixels.

If this one goes back I shall simply give up on Apple as their QC on these things is diabolical.

Give the squeezing of the bezel on either side of your home button a try (not hard, obviously) and let me know if that sorts the issue for you.

All the best ...

Thanks Tommy,

I did try the reboot a number of times in addition to the other efforts. I have had luck at least operating the home button using the two fingers on the home bezel tecnique but when it's in that mood that has to be done every time.

I have to review the records of my iOS upgrades. It's possible it followed a recent sync and upgrade but I'm not sure. I'm going to try a backup and restore somehow next. Let's hope iOS 5 helps!

Take care.
