UPDATE: To my post from Aug...

After having mild success for a few days undocking Safari and removing various iPhone only apps from the iPad, my home button stopped working all together. None of the fixes or work-arounds worked any more. Luckily, I contacted Apple support and they looked up my warranty information. I was just inside the 1 year coverage for hardware related issues. I sent the iPad back to Apple and they replaced it for free.

I agree with some of the more realistic posts here, this issue is purely hardware related. If a work-around posted here works for you it will only be temporary. This button will eventually fail all together.

For those not within the 1yr replacement window, I would recommend upgrading to iOS 5 and turning on Multi-touch gestures. There is a five-finger pinch gesture that will get you back to the home screen.

Do not reset the iPad, recalibrate the Home button.

1. Open a stock iOS app, such as Contacts

2. Press & hold the sleep/wake button at the top of your device until the red slider control appears.

3. Immediately release the sleep/wake button and press & hold the Home button. Hold until the red slider disappears. Release the Home button.

You should now be on your home screen and your Home button should be recalibrated! Recalibrating your home button this way should work on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

PS - Sorry to disappiont Tommy London, but my iPad 2 is perfect. It even passes his dead pixel challenge.

Been suffering the Home button problem on my iPad 2. Tried the Safari Undock - this worked. Have also recalibrated the Home button for good measure and it is still working fine. I'm not keen to agree this is a hardware fault and I don't think the occasional inconvenience warrants sending my iPad back for repair when there is every chance a replacement will do the same thing.🙂
