Why does my iPhone 4 have a different Model # than those on display at Apple?
I noticed while in my local Apple store today that their iPhone 4's have a higher Model # in their Settings --> About screen. When I compare mine vs. theirs, why is my Model # lower?

My biggest fear is that Apple will secretly correct the hardware issues on the iPhone 4 & screw over everyone who bought it early by not doing a recall since it would cost them an arm & a leg.

See screenshots of both units compared:

Anyone with some common sense will fully believe that the Iphone 4's that are shipping as of now have some-type of hardware fix. If you don't believe this than you are in major denial and we must live in a perfect world where companies don't cover up recalls. Hope the wait in the lines was worth it.

Bitter much? Geez.

I'd also like to know what the different models numbers correspond to. I have not upgraded yet, but would like to know.

Sadly, I believe you are right. As we all know, Apple has a very hard time admitting a mistake, so my guess is they will quietly fix the problem on future phones and hope no one notices.

If the various problems are hardware-related and Apple does ever do anything to correct the problem(s) (other than release the iPhone 5), I would think it would take quite a while before the updated units made it to customers. I can't imagine Apple being able to find the problem, find a solution, implement the solution, and update all production facilities in such a short time. Additionally, even though Apple and AT&T are both officially backordered, I bet there are already tons of unit that are still in varying degress of production but are beyond any point of implementing any kind of fix. Just my thoughts.

Also, as I've seen others point out, it would stand to reason that any changes whatsoever to the antenna would require a whole mess with the FCC.

One additional thought. I would think Apple pretty much can't afford to correct any hardware issues (if they exist) with the iPhone 4. Aside from the financial impact of a recall or something, simply from a design and engineering standpoint, Apple has probably been finished with the iPhone 4 and onto other things for quite some time. With the competitivenss of the technology industry, I would think that any resources channeled at this point to what is (for them) already old technology, would destroy time-lines for new products and cost them dearly.

I personally think it's wrong NOT to address any problems. I'm just thinking out loud that, even on future runs, it may just be too costly.

it could be the difference between the 16 and 32gb phones

Not a chance. Trust me, I'm no beginner at this; I follow every build of the iOS core firmware and I noticed that Apple actually makes special scaled down versions of iOS 4 for their demo units now which don't include Reset All option, lock phone, Parental controls, and everything else that a troublemaker can get his or her hands on.

Ok. I don't remember where I got this info other than to say it was somewhere in this forum but here is the skinny on model numbers. The first 2 sets on the list are carrier locked model numbers either purchased from AT&T or through apple (freestanding storefront or online) based on the address it will be used at. Hope it helps some of you...
