iPhone 4 - No Sound, Bad Hardware?

Received my iPhone 4 via FedEx the day before yesterday. Shortly after initial sync, I noticed the phone was complete mute. Volume was up, mute was off. No sounds from speakers at bottom of phone when phone call was received or when music played. Headphones work.
Rebooted, powered off etc... no joy.

Looks like a hardware issue, if I shook or tapped the phone (on the lower right hand side of screen) the speakers would work briefly then cut off. Looks like a bad wiring job. Was hoping to avoid the apple store but will head there for lunch. Anyone else have this problem?

Various, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone 4 32GB Black.

Hello,

Play the music and then do hard press and hold on the bottom right of iPhone 4's device with your thumbnail. You'll hear the song but once you release your thumb don't be suprise if the sound disappears.

Fyi, your device is badly misproduction . 😟

It was happening on my device too, I bought the iPhone 4 last April 29th, 2011 and the speaker didn't work after I synced with iTunes. I was suprised when I found that this problem happens on many iphone4 devices as well,

2 weeks ago I went back to the Apple's dealer in my town ( Telkomsel - Surabaya - Indonesia ) and told them about this problem but they couldn't accept and won't replace the device, they told me to call or visit the service center ( Mitra Telekomunikasi Selular ) and the customer service officer ( Mr. Setio ) told me they will replace the speaker module.

Till today, I disagree their recommendation because I was thinking that I buy a new device but there's problem but the problem is mass problem that happens on many people on the same model so that we are worthy to have the replacement with new iPhone 4's device , if they do replace the speaker's module it means that the device is becoming refurbished device.

What do you think ? Please advice. Thank you

i just got my iphone 4 today (bought a new one as i lost my 1st one) and unluckily, this new one has the no sound issue. but it's good that i found this thread! ok, so here's what i've tried:

  • pressing the bottom right corner solves the issue temporarily , as long as i press and hold. as soon as i release pressure, the sound disappears. sometimes varying the pressure varies the volume.
  • the iphone cable trick worked for my phone (up/down/left/right push), i think the sound got revived on the 2nd try (at the down push).
  • sound is still ok, but i will monitor this, since it's a contact issue it may come back.

thanks xkata for the tips. good that the iphone cable trick worked, i was toying with the idea of opening the iphone 🙂

Just got a new iPhone 4 from Telstra and no sound. This thread is great, thanks to all who contributed. Pressed the right hand bottom of the phone and sound restored for a short time.

Spoke to Apple support who first asked me to switch it off mute, then remove the plastic cover it was delivered in, great help and then said I have to restore the phone and reboot and then I can take it to the store and if I didnt do these things they would make me go away until done.

Booking into the Apple store means wasting at least an 30 minutes min in the line, I have a job I dont have time to hand around there, its worse than going to see a medical professional. They they will diagnose, if the sound is working after having pushed the bottom right at the time then they will open it up and check.

I think Apple assume I want to hang around in their store and breathe Apple and then talk with a genius at length about this great phone. Well I have news for them, I just want a reliable phone that works out the box. Simple.

Anyway, have rebooted, reset, restored and nada, the sound is stuffed. Just push down on the bottom right hand corner and its back.

Will take up with Telstra on Monday.

I have ahd the same problem, off and on, and have owned the phone for a few months. After taking it numerous times to the local AT&T store to no avail, I had to call Apple. I got a nice fellow who walked me through all of the typical procedures which produced no discernable solution. We ended up backing up the phone onto the laptop, then restoring it to factory settings. No change. The rep told me that this was a hardware issue and that they would have to ship me a new phone. So after earmarking $700 on my credit card (which is ludicrous for a deposit on a $299 phone) they will send a new one out, and all I have to do is switch out hte SIM card.

Now here is the interesting part: After learning how to eject the SIM card I did so on the broken phone (new one not here yet.) Looked ok so I reinstalled and rebooted. The problem mysteriously was fixed. The phone worked fine for about the next 2 hours then right back to the old problem-ridden state. I like to plug my phone into the AUX jack in my car and it would play through the headphone jack for about 5 secs then would crash.

So in closing, I don't know what the heck is wrong, but I am hoping that the new phone will fix it. As I am a Dentist who uses my phone as an after-hours emergency contact line I need to get this crap fixed and soon. Overall I like the phone but need to make sure that it stays working. ARGH!! I'm half hoping that this issue is an App related thing and not a try hardware issue. I'm apt to believe this since it works some of the time and not others. We'll see. I'll update after I get my new phone and see how it works.

Same issue. I fixed the problem by compressing the lower right and left corners of the phone (near the speaker and mic) between my thumb and index finger.

I learned this techniqe from another post (except the post said to compress the phone in the upper roght region).

This indicates that there is a hardware issue. I will wait and see if the problem recurs. If so, I will return the phone for an exchange (within the one year warranty period, of course).

This *****!!

I also had no sound problem. Pressing volume control was showing "Headphones" in even though there was no headphones. Even after pushing audio cable pushing in and out ,there was no success but problem was easily solved. i clicked on "Voice memo" app on desktop and listened to one of my recordig. To my amazement sound on youtube, skymobile came back. It is not hardware problem but soft ware problem at least in my case.

Dont return your iphone to store or your operator. They will not repair it instead give u a replacement. Your will loose all your important things. I have hundreds of documents in "genious scan" and "Jotnot" "notes" which other wise i would have lost. Cant loose them for new phone or money.

I just got my i (diot) phone today and like everyone else was happy at first sync this and that and got the sim activated etc. etc. and got the first call but I kept calling and yelling hello as I cannot hear the other party. Tried a few times and still cannot hear the other party but they can hear me fine. Did all and everything according to this post and from other forums, and google but no luck for me.

Isn't that a ****** day that you find such expensive device from such a well known and famous brand that pushes out their products so fast that they don't even care about QC. Someone who is in charge of the outsource to some factory in china or whichever country should be FIRED! And includes the people who are in the QC depart.

Mind you....i got a macbook, ipad2.......Guess I got a bad rotten apple from this one lol.

dear SL1000R,

i understand your frustration, you buy a very expensive thing, that you love so much and then, nothing, zip, zero. it happened to me, went back to the store where i bought (no apple store) and they said, goes back to apple...Aaarghhh I came to this forum as someone said here, push on the bottom of the phone. I have done it and yes, it came alive.

try to push gently, on the right side below the screen, near the round button. good luck

I have sound coming out when playing games, music etc. Only when calls coming in or call out, other party can hear me but I couldn't hear anything all. Have tried every tips and ticks provided here and other forums but just didn't work for me. Have called up Apple Support and was told to get a replacement. I am now waiting for Vodafone authorised resller (which I have the phone when upgraded the plan with them) if they can provide a replacement. If not I will have to bring it to Apple Store.

Yes, I think so too , loose wire. Interesting actually, i also have an Ipod classic ( 80GB), and got a problem of blur screen ( not clear anymore, color is changed to light blue) , and everytime it happens, I just need to press on a spot at the right conner in the middle and it comes back to original colors. So maybe this is a wire problem that Apple has for more than 1 product.
