How do I ignore a suggestion of the iPhone automatic spell check?

On my old phone, if it didn't approve of a word I wrote, the suggestion came up and I could just tap on the screen to ignore the phones suggestion. That doesn't work on the new phone.. I know I'm missing something but what?
I don't want to cancel spell check cause I love it but once in a while I use foreign words and I want it to be easy for me to ignore the suggestion.
