Cannot install iTunes

I am trying to install iTunes on my new laptop with Windows 7 and I keep getting this message:
"Error writing to file: C:\Program Files(x86)\iTunes\Mozilla Plugins\npitunes.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory."
I went to that folder and it is empty, I am logged in as an Administrator, I right clicked the download icon and ran it as an administrator, and I am using the 64-bit version because the 32 would not even begin to install. I am usually good with computers but I just don't have any clue what this means or how to fix it. I just was iTunes. Please help. Thanks

That one can indicate that the directory in question is damaged, although plausibly your user account may have lost permissions on it.

Better check permissions on it first, I guess. Right-click the \Mozilla Plugins\ directory and select "Properties". Go into the "Security" tab and select the name of your user account. Do you have full control on the directory?

Good lord. That's a rare one. The 2381 is suggesting permissions trouble rather than damage ... but the account that has lost permissions is generally the SYSTEM account rather than your user account or the administrators group.

No indication at all as to which directory is being complained about? (There's a shotgun approach we can take to getting SYSTEM permissions back, but I try to do things a bit more delicately if at all possible.)
