iMovie won't export in 1080p

I'm using video footage from two sources. One is my MacBook Pro's screen, which is 2560x1600, and the other is my iPhone's rear camera, which is 4k. Neither of them are below 1080p, yet iMovie won't allow me to export to 1080p.

I doubt it's hardware limitation, since this is a $2000+ laptop. It has 16 GB of RAM, 1 GB of video memory, and 500 GB of storage.

Does anyone know why iMovie won't export in 1080p? TIA.

You didn't mention what operating system or iMovie version that you are using, so I will assume current versions of both. That would be Mojave and iMovie 10.1.10.

Try setting a newly created blank project as 1080p by placing a known 1080p clip into it as the first clip added to the project. Then add your other clips. After adding your other clips you can delete the first clip that you added. Now see if you can share out at 1080p.

If still not luck, try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can share at 1080p.

Hi Rich,

Sorry, I forgot to mention what version I was on. You are correct I am on the latest for both.

Put each clip in a separate project and it let me export in each of its resolution just fine. But for some reason in my project it only put to 720p.

Reseting the preferences didn't work, but for some reason it worked when I recreated the project from scratch despite not doing anything different. I'll try to put a 1080p clip in before editing. Thanks!
